clean it with water and make sure it has got all the bugs, trash, etc. out. and let it air dry. then oil it, you could even use tranny fluid if you get really desperate.but with the k&n kits at what $10 just buy that and roll with it.apply oil with it off the car, dont get it in the mass air flow sensor.
1. Wash in a bucket of soapy water.
2. Rinse in a bucket of clear water.
3. Hang with a coat hanger and dry.
4. If you want to go pretty colors, the K&N cleaner kit is fine. I use WD-40.

Use the K&N cleaner or purple power degreaser. Leave it on for like 1-2 minutes. Run luke warm water from the inside of the filter and let it drain out (reverse of how air enters the filter) so that the dirt will not wedge deeper into the filter. Do not use water that is too hot or you can damage the filter material. Let it air dry, do not use a hair drer or similar item because, again, the excess heat can damage the filter material. Spray one layer of oil over it. Do not over do the oil unless you would like to replace your MAF sensor.

I run my K@Ns through the dishwasher, then air dry and lube with K@N Spray Oil ---Let the oil dry a little also. The oil is somewhat unique in that it has a thicker viscousity when it drys and stays sticky.
A K@N Air Filter with out Lube is NOT an Air Filter.
