Default Tranny Replaced - hard shifting 1st and 2nd...

New Tranny... problem not gone!

The problem happens specifically when down shifting! I have to stop the car before I can downshit into 2nd or 1st. Sucker just won't go into gear...

I find second gear to be a little tough to downshift into. I usually double-clutch this downshift and give the throttle a more-aggressive blip than I do when downshifting into any other gears.

I never downshift into first, but I would think that it would be pretty tough to hit that one. Fortunately, this car has so much torque that second gear can pick up from anything above about 4 mph, so a moving downshift into first shouldn't really be necessary.

3rd,

You may want to verify with your dealer that they used the actual Nissan Transmission fluid and not a different brand. Evidentally, there is a notice, from Feb 19, 2003 (not sure if it is a TSB) specifying that the dealers use the Nissan brand of transmission fluid. I just had mine changed because the dealer had used a different brand when they replaced my tranny. On the drive home, the shifting seemed to be smoother. But I will have to spend more time with the car to see if it really is better.

I don't think it would make it as difficult as you are stating, but might help.

Default Downshifting

I know I'm just a girl, but I noticed that when down shifting, it seems to slip a little bit, almost like it's going to pop out of gear. Does this seem normal to you all?

CinZ,

That does not sound normal. Is it something that you can consistently reproduce?

If so, I suggest you take a drive with a Service Writer.

CinZ take it in. I had the same problem and had a first to second gear pop (basically it popped out of gear).

Default popping

Thanks for the info. I'll take it to the dealer and have it checked! It's not all the time but enough to notice!

Even though your trans is new, have you had any grinding on upshifts 2nd to 3rd?

I haven't had any problems upshifting, downshifting [even into first while rolling slowly & making sure to match the revs] or reverse gear.

So far at 3800 miles a very nice trans except for the 2nd to 3rd thing! Exasperating?.... Yes!

Not that I noticed. But I'm going to wait to see if I can get it to be consistent before taking it in. I'll watch for it though.

Talked to the Service Mgr on Saturday and the plan is to re-build the trans. at the dealership. Fine with me as long as it's fixed.

He also re-stated that Nissan has no official record of the 2nd to 3rd problem across the country to date.
