Default headlight fuse keeps blowing

hey guys, i have an aftermarket HID kit on my car for about 3 years now. just recently i blew a fuse which i didn't see big deal, so i put another of the same rating fuse in, turned on the headlights, and it blew again.

now..the strange thing is, the fuse will not blow if i have the engine on, it only blows when the engine is off.

the picture illustrates how i remembered wiring it.

any ideas why? thanks guys

is your retrofit HID kit a direct plug&play unit?
You should not have any problems at all since the factory wiring harness plugs directly into the aftermarket ballast/ignitor. i got mine for over three years trouble free.

As far is it not popping when the car is on, only when it is off still resorts back to the same thign in my mind. Bad ground wire or corrosion on a power wire. I know its a pain, but time to pull off the wheel well and check for a bad connection on the conversion kit. If that leads to a dead end, try unplugging 1 set of the lights and see which side is popping the fuse. Might need a whole new conversion if problem persist. Let us know what you find.

I'm thinking of a failed ballast grounding.

Do a visual inspection on as much of the wiring as you can to see if something got pinched. The fuse ought to be a ten amp fuse give or take a bit. Make sure if the first fuse was a slo-blow that you replaced it with a slo-blow.

If you can pull the wire for one side from the other that would tell you if one of the two ballasts were bad. If you've got a VOM measure the resistance of each ballast to ground to see if they're different.

just through a bigger fuse in there and call it a day!

j/k

dont do that, people really do it but its not safe or recomended. Its burning up due to a short. Youre drawing too much current somewhere.

thanks guys, i was thinking of a faulty ground as well. i need to double check it. as far as i can see, the only groud is through the relay, the individual ballasts do not have a ground if i remember correctly. it uses a 20amp fuse.

it is a plug and play unit (i have a base model)
