Default What oil?

Having oil change at 1,500 miles. Can someone suggest what type of oil I'm supposed to use? Not sure if it's in the manual and too lazy to go get it right now. Thanks.

SAE 5W-30, API Service SJ per the owner's manual.
(SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40 may be used above 0 degrees F.)

Since this is a synthetic oil, how often should we be getting oil changes?

It need not necessarily be synthetic, but I still will observe the recommended change intervals to be certain there is no question during the warranty period.

I was under the impression that the Z came with conventional from the factory. The service manager that I spoke with told me not to put synthetic in until 10,000 miles... That sound about right?

There are many different opinions on the matter. Redline oil recommends changing after 3000 miles or so. I changed at 2600 to AMSOil, after 'excercising' the car just a bit.

I'm at 1,500 miles. Do I even need to change my oil yet? I know some people like to change oil at the end of break-in period, but is this really necessary/recommended? Someone please advise.

Maybe it's overkill, but I've alway changed my oil at the end of a break-in.

Per the factory manual, your first oil change and service is scheduled at 3750 miles. (unless you do all highway driving in a warm climate with no short stop and goes, then it's actuall 7500)

On that note... 95 percent of my driving is hiway driving. 85 miles each direction to and from work at aboout 70 - 80 mph. Would any of you actually cinsider waiting 7500 miles between oil changes like the manual say I can?

Default Oil Change

I had my oil changed at 3000 miles and have an appointment to change it again in a couple of days.... I'll be at 6000 miles.

I'm using Mobil 1 which I buy at WalMart in a 5 gallon jug.

Yea I know it's overkill but I'm keeping this car til I die so I want to take good care of it.

I would definately do the first change much sooner(<3000). If you use dyno oil then I would stick to the 3750 schedule. If you use low end synthetic like Syntec then 7500 should be good. If you use high end synthetic like Amsoil 2000 then you should be able to go higher. You're doing about 20,000 miles in 6 months so that would be about your max interval. If you go that far consider getting a bigger filter, the stock one is tiny!

just thought i would post this i found on mobil 1 website

MYTH: You should break in your engine with conventional oil, then switch to Mobil 1.

REALITY: You can start using Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ in new vehicles at any time, even in brand-new vehicles. In fact, Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ is original equipment (it is installed at the factory) in:

Chevrolet Corvette
All Porsche vehicles
Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles
Dodge Viper
Ford Mustang Cobra R
All Aston Martin cars

One of the myths that persists about Mobil 1 is that new engines require a break-in period with conventional oil. Current engine manufacturing technology does not require this break-in period. As indicated by the decisions of the engineers who design these high-performance cars, Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ can be used in an engine from the day you drive the car off the showroom floor.

Default What oil?

I use Castrol 10/40 in winter 20/50 in summer. Why 250,000 miles on my 1985 300zx Turbo and no repairs on engine and still has original factory turbocharger. For me that says sometime.
