Default Fast idle on start up

Ok everytime I start my car in the morning it idles faster than usual but once I drive it for a sec it goes back to normal and everytime I start it after its warm it idles normal. A neighbor heard my car start in the morning and it was idling fast like it always does on a morning startup alittle over 1000 rpm. He claims to be a mechanic and says I need new plugs and that Im killing my car and insist that I let him change the plugs today for a fee of course. Keep in mind the car only idles fast when the engine is cold on the very first start up and I barely know the guy. Is he just trying to get money out of me? Ive heard of other Z owners saying they have a fast idle in the mornings too. BTW its an 04 with 33k

mine is an 07 n it does the same thing, I used to have an 05 and it did the same thing. I think that its because the engine is cold, plus when I get home at night I park n immed. Shut off so it might be the revs where higher upon shut off, but I really think it just cause its cold!!

Perfectly normal. All EFI-controlled engines have a high idle during warm-up mode. Even carbureted engines had a system to keep the idle speed up during warm-up.

That's one of the most incompetant diagnoses I have ever heard. Stay away from him.

That's the most amazing crap I've heard from a "mechanic" in a long time. bailey bill said it well. You are NOT killing your car... at least not with the idle speed, anyway.

On cold start, my 07 idles *well* north of 1000rpm. The manual says to let the car warm up for 30+ seconds before moving. I do. Usually I let it warm up until the idle speed comes down (on its own) to about 1200rpm, then I back out of the garage and ooze down my driveway and then up the gradual hill in front of my house. By the time I get to the main street corner, the idle speed is pretty normal.

HTH, and stay away from that neighbor.

My 07 also starts off high on a cold start but many times it's like in the 1750 rpm range which seems high to me. But after a couple secs it drops and I like the sound when it idle's that high so it doesn't bother me .
I also never drive the car till the idle's have dropped to at least a 1000 rpms. I would advise others to do the same to prevent unneccesary wear and damage to the car.
