I emailed Mobil and asked them if their oils were group III or IV. They implied it was a mix as you say. But they said it was group III w/ some IV added. If I were to guess, I would say it's primarily group III w/ a little group IV.

I remember arguing with an Amsoil dealer about this. There's also the thing about Mobil not being able to label some of their oil as 100% synthetic.

But some seem to think Mobil 0w-40 is still primarly group IV

mobil1 japan's website seems to point to 5w-30 and 10w-30 as having a group 3 base, neither of which meet the BMW or MB specs. These are also the most commonly used oils in VQ's.

Not all M1 is PAO based like (5w30,10w30) the ones you mentioned are PAO based. There were test results UOA that were posted a while back that I can not find again, that showed it wasn't. Reason why it's still talked about a lot and are a heavy discussion on forums.

You have your sticky, G35driver has theirs, and bitog has theirs. All of them conflict with each other on data and info. So who to believe?
I checked the G35 site, and that's MY sticky! They copied and pasted it over there, LOL. I had to join a new forum just to maintain the accuracy of my own information, what's up with that?

Very true, and I posted that here. As I have said, there is no doubt they use a PAO base stock, just a question of how much of it.

Again though, base stock is really irrelevent by itself. If anyone has looked at any amount of UOA's from teh same engine, you willsee G2 oils outperform G5 oils, some G3 and G3+ blends protect better than PAO base oils, and so on. It's like saying that Moly can't protect your engine, but Schaeffer's and others have so many UAO's that say otherwise, yet some oils with MoTDC look pretty bad on a UOA. If it were as easy as looking at the data sheet and being ble to pick one oil out as the best, then the whole argument would be null. Hence, don't worry about the base stock. I can't believe I even got sucked into this, but it burns me a little to hear the same rumor a billion times over and no facts- when the base stcok by itself is irrelevent.

I stated the same on multiple occasions on g35driver. The base oil is not the key part, but Mobil1 claims to use 100% PAO bases, which is misleading IMO. There are also gas chromatography results on BITOG that suggest mobil1 5w-30 containing a significant mineral oil base content. I don't think any of us have ever suggested that group 3 is bad in itself, but simply that some mobil1 oils did apparently change formulations, to include group 3 base oils, and this appears to have resulted in poorer UOA's, not the VQ specifically, because it wasn't around when the change potentially occured, but from what others have posted on BITOG, there suggests that such a change did occur. How much of an affect this had is kind of a moot point as you point out because the additive package combined with the base oil results in a complete oil which is what should be the basis of comparison, and not base oils. A good example is Amsoil's XL line which is group 3 based, but on paper performs better than mobil 1's 5w-30 formulation in a few key areas
Mobil 1 Amsoil XL-7500
5W-30 5W-30

Viscosity Index - 169 173
(higher = better)

HT/HS - 3.09 3.2
(higher = better)

TBN - N.A. 9.0
(higher = better)

Pour Point - -65.2F. -45 .
(lower = better)

Flash Pont - 446 F. 453 F.
(higher = better)

Yea, it was the oil. You should contact Castrol so they can claim increased hp over the Mobil.
