Default Please help! before the dealer rips me-off.

Guys,

I have an 05 Z. Out of warrantee by six weeks. Mmmm.
Here’s the problem A/C center temp dial
.
When A/C is set to max cold (60º) all vents blow out cold air, nice. When I rotate the dial just a notch above max cold, center vents start to blow warm air and side vents air keeps nice and cool as they should.

What gives? Any help would be sooo appreciated.

Have you done any work to the car lately (i.e. audio work, interior work)? Sounds like could be 1 of 2 problems. Either the interior temp sensor is either unplugged or not working. Other option is the control unit for your temperature control has an internal problem....only can be replaced. Just some hints for you.

If I were you I'd look around local salvage yards to see if you can snag the climate control unit off of a junker. It won't cost you very much at all and you will be able to scratch off a big x-factor in figuring this problem out.

If Nissan would order this part for you there's no telling how much they would charge.

Changing it out is very very easy. 20 minutes tops for someone with no experience. It very well could be something else but hey, might as well try imo.

try something yourself before you take it there. You may suprise yourself honestly, i usually do. You wont get out of the dealer for less than $300. Here is a set of temp controls for an '04. It should work on your '05? Someone chime in if i am wrong.

Default Thank for the input

Checked with Nissan parts. An 04 temp unit wont work in an 05. So, if that's the prob. $230.00 at the parts counter.
I will look at some local junk yards first.

Thanks again

very unfortunate, but i wouldn't take that to the bank. Do some more research, see if you find proof that there is a difference. I bet the plug on the back is the same...

Either way, look for an '05 one. You can get one a lot cheaper than $230, thats for sure. Good luck with things.

I'm now having the same problem. I discovered it after I installed a new head unit. I checked all the connections to the A/C unit when I was reinstalling. There are three plugs and they are secure. Let me know if you find the culprit. Where's the temp sensor harness? I don't think I ever unplugged it when I installed the head unit.

Maximapower,

I will. My brother has an 05 automatic, I assume that I can still lift up his version of the boot console cover (mine is a 6 spd.).

We were going to swap out the A/C temp control unit w/ his, to see if it fixes my problem. I won't get to it for a couple of weeks. I'll post back.

PS: I spoke with an other guy at Nissan who told me that it could also be an actuator valve that is defective.

These kind of things happen to electronics and failure to save the $2,000+ you didn't spend by not buying a 100k extended warranty comes back to haunt many.

Junkyards are a godsend when collecting all the multidozens of modules that might fail if you keep a car long enough.
After 10 years Nissan usually stops stocking replacements..............at some point it is cheap to by a $1000 TOTALED G and keep in back yard.

there is a temp sensor that hooks up to a tube under the dash...if you have added a stereo recently it could have come unplugged

Thanks for the input from everybody.

Yes the stereo was gutted out, but I kept the head unit. The A/C started going south for no apparent reason, three years after the stereo swap.
PS: NOW it is intermittent. Which leads me to think that it could be the dial, not the vent actuator.
I’ll deal with this next week.
