Transmission Redesigned
Does anyone know about the transmission being redesigned? I am scheduled to have a new transmission put in my Z soon. I was told that Nissan has a redesigned trans to address the problems, which is also why they are on backorder. I am curious if anyone has had a redesigned trans put in? I was also told that Bridgestone has redesigned the RE-040's, which is also the reason why they are on backorder. Seems like alot of redesign. I'm not sure what to believe these days.
I just had a new trans put in. They also replaced the entire clutch to go with the new trans. It feels completely different in a good way the clutch it like pressing a button now and the new trans is alot less notchy and easier to place into gear. Or maybe this is how it was supposed to feel in the beginning and I just had a broken one.
How are yall getting the tranny replaced? Are you talking to your dealer or calling Nissan direct? Mine is getting that bad notchy feeling and clunky sounds pretty bad. It's pretty embarassing at times too.
I think notchy will not get you a new tranny, but if you have GRINDING 2nd to 3rd gear, then you can probably request a new tranny, after numerous trips to the service dept.
I have the notchy feeling, especially in 2nd gear, but after changing to synthetic gear oil, it is much better now.
I am using Royal Purple 75W95 API4 gear oil.. give it a try and see if it helps..

I just took my Z to the dealer yesterday and they did find a problem with the transmission, but it was a generic answer. They said that something is wrong with it, but they don't know what. Nissan won't let them work on it. Nissan is sending out a brand new transmission and the old one is being sent back to them so that they can take it apart... Hopefully it will come in soon. They said 3-4 weeks to get it in... The only cool thing was that the dealer acknowledged the problem immediately and ordered a new one.
I now get a loud rattle when shifting in 2nd & 3rd at 2000 RPM. It also rattles when in neutral with the clutch out. I've never had a problem with grinding like some other people have mentioned.

I'd be careful about putting tranny oil in there that's not approved by nissan, at least until you know your tranny isn't going to have the same problem the other people are. Knowing dealers the way I do they'll try to blame it on your different oil.
