Default Burning Clutch!?

Hey all,

Strangest thing happened to me yesterday with the Z.

I live in the country and when heading to town, I hit my favorite stretch of "flat-out" and put the Z through it's paces winding out close to redline in first and second.

Upon shifting into third there was no third! It felt like I missed the gear but the shifter was in the right position. Immediately the strong smell of burning clutch filled the car. I shifted into neutral, slowed down and pulled over, waited a bit and shifted into first and eased off with all gears working. The burning smell eventually abated.

Any ideas what might have happened?

TIA, JT

Year of car, mileage, all history are important factors here

It's a 2006 with about 10,000 miles. I've had no issues with the car except oil consumption which is being researched presently.
