Hard to tell its size, but it looks like part of the aluminum heat shield for the muffler. If you found it near the rear of the car, look above the muffler itself and you'll see a aluminum 'shelf' that fits into the unibody above it. The question than becomes: how did it get loose?
mmm I think thats what it is. It looks like it hold either a hose or a harness but I dont know where.
My car had a TT kit I got it back to stock now I have this piece left and I know it belong to the car since I had it in a box that the shop gave me after the TT kit was install and all my factory parts where given to me.

It won't be a heat shield for the muffler, because of the black plastic clamp on top. There are no wiring or hose harnesses in the muffler area. Other than that, I have no idea where it goes. Looks like a bracket that goes in the dash somewhere. The reason I say this, is because all brakets on the exterior of the car or engine bay will be coated or painted. This bracket is bare steel. The only bare steel brackets the Z has are in the interior....

You have a point but a couple of weeks ago I notice some one was parting out some parts of his engine and he had a picture with a bunch of stuff in it and this same bracket was in there. But I can't find that thread.
Well I found this picture on the internet show the bracket on the engine compartment next the the steering pump. Left bottom but I still can't figure out where its bolted
