Just got my Z back from the dealership this morning, tranny and clutch replaced at 17k miles. It took care of three noticeable defects. One is the sound that someone else had recorded earlier in this thread, that occured when pressing the clutch in and out. The other was the slight hesitation through first gear and the third was the smoothness in shifting between gears. The reason I took it in was grinding in third gear about three weeks ago. I wouldnt have known what it was right away if it werent for this thread. THANKS EVERYONE!! Now the only thing I do not like with the new clutch is the space above reverse (to the right of 5th gear) is literally a corner. So when I'm driving and i want to throw it into 5th gear, I end up in a corner and have to move the shifter about an inch to the left to make it into 5th gear. Is this right?? I'm almost thinking there is a guide missing that would direct the shifter into 5th.
A little upset,
Kari

Glad I looked into this again because mines beginning to grind again and it's the 2nd tranny. Replaced Oct 03 with 7K miles and now at 26K miles, it's horrible. Time to get a lightened flywheel at the same time.

My 04' Roadster is starting to grind 2nd gear. I had this issue w/ Nissan before and now its starting all over again. My production date is 1/04. I hope I don't have to fight w/ NNA like last time.

SSK, I have a 1/04 ZR as well. How many miles do you have on it? Mine has 600 and so far so good. I does feel notchy going to second...but not what I would call a grind....yet.

Got mine replaced. Whines in first and second gears. Had to bring it in to get the rear axle nuts torqued. Not sure if the tranny replacement affected, but when launching an audible pop was apparent.

I have 7K miles on mine and it shifts great. It was built this time last year. Did I just get lucky and get a good one? What % of owners are having a problem? Is it more common with the early 2003's?

just got word from the dealer that they are replacing the whole tranny along with a new clutch plate not to mention, the seat, the grease streaks and the fact that my window fell down into the door and wouldn't go back up (which they blamed on my window tint). they are fixing it all with no charge to me.

I got a new tranny and clutch when you get it repalced at 16000 miles, make sure the part number ends with 008 (the 007 and 006) are from 03. the new tranny and clutch have been slightly changed for 04 if you need any more info call jason or jeff at performance I also had my seat bracket replaced, my headlight 2 times for condensation, and my horn stopped working all fixed and still love my Z. ANd love the new tranny its way more smooth shifting and no more 3rd gear grind YAY

2003 Performance Coupe
18,000k
New tranny/clutch/flywheel coming from Culver City Nissan soon.
Add this to the tire feathering problems and the rear axle clicking noises while in reverse that I've already had to have dealt with. awesome.

23k miles
Cerritos Nissan, Cerritos, CA
First replacement on order...found out today. They are also ordering replacement parts to fix my window that won't roll down and also a fuel sender sensor to fix the problem with the gas gauge. Also fixing the window streaking. I like to do all my repairs at one time cuz these things would really annoy me if I went in one at a time.
