My 2003 Touring, production # before 10,000, mileage just over 38,000 miles is going in tomorrow 12/11/06 for the 3rd gear grind. I spoke with my Service Manager and he's familiar with the problem. I asked him if it was bad syncros, his answer "You won't hear that from Nissan Enginering, but I'm saying yes."
I had always thought that 2nd & 3rd were very tight shifts (very notchy). I, like everyone else thought the grind was the result of a poor shift. After a few days I determined my combination was:
1. Cold morning (30 degrees F or less)
2. Car sat overnight
3. RPM's over 3000
I could also reproduce the problem by going in & out between Neutral & 3rd several times quickly.
Here's a list of other fun stuff with my Z
1. 1 side to side swap of tires and 3rd set of Fronts (roar is coming back)
2. Dead Passenger Window
3. Dead Body Control Module (Interior lights)
4. Fuel Hose Recall
5. There have been a few other things too, but they've gotten lost in my mind.
Anyway, hope the description above helps someone else with reproducing for their dealer/service manager.

How did you guys go about this ordeal. I plan on goi ng to Dealer and telling them what is going on. Do they have to crack the tra nny open or just verify the noise.
Thanks guys 22k miles. 03.

Just got a call from Planet Nissan today that my transmission has arrived. Car has 51K and some change on the Odometer. Went in for a 5th gear grind (5th gear synchro destroyed)
