Ive owned mustangs and camaros that idle smoother than this Z. Its not even an idle its more like a stumble. I asked the dealer service dept if they could bump up the idle and they said that was not possible. WTF?

Default My problem exactly.

On the test drive I shifted 2nd to 5th at ~50MPH because that's the easiest way to demonstrate the problem -- the higher the RPMs are above the perfect rev match, the more it grinds. Which indicates, to me, a synchronizer problem. It does it in a shift from any gear to 5th, as long as the difference in RPMs is significant enough. (e.g., if you're shifting at 2500RPMs the whole time, obviously the drop isn't going to be enough, and it you take more than 1/2 sec to shift, the RPMs have already fallen enough that it won't grind). If there's no TSB, I'm tempted to print out all 31 pages of this whole post and bring it in to the service department.
I could not have described my problem any more clearly. What has been your outcome? Thanks. Rob Collins

Had my tranny replaced at 12,000 miles due to it locking-up in 5th gear.

I'm at 22,000 miles now, and while crusing at highway speeds with the clutch fully pressed, when I shift back and forth from 5 to 6 and back to 5......I get a definate GRIND.

Looks like I'll be getting a THIRD tranny.

I have actually been babying this second transmission.

Yeah....... It is truly sad that can not get solved. I have absolutely nothing but great things to say about my 2003 Performance model except the tranny and negative camber. But I still say that for the $... Nothing can touch it in (listen carefully): Style & Performnace.

Question:

If I'm averaging a NEW TRANNY every 11,000 miles.............what will Nissan do for me once the warranty expires ?

Check nissan parts sites on the tranny price then get a per hour installation quote and how many hours to install.

That is correct. The "powertrain warranty" is good for 60k miles. According to my last warranty repair, the charges listed totaled @ $2,500 if I am correct. Somehow I bet the charges would be a little higher if one were out of warranty...
Well I won't be finding out. It appears they are good (at least in my case/driving) for @... Well come to think of it... all 3 were sorta longer than the previous:

1st = 5k miles
2nd = 15k miles - And it went all the way up to @ 42k miles!
3rd = I plan to replace my Z this Spring/Summer and I drive @ 1k - 1,200 miles a month. That should be anywhere from 6k - 8k miles more for me. If all goes according to plan...

Well, I just scheduled my appointment for my first tranny replacement. 34K miles here but it's been grinding for a little bit now.

Now, to pick a different flywheel...

(p.s. just got my second set of new front tired under warranty on my 04)

Dear fellow 350Z owners,

I was wondering if you could help me. My Z has 11,000 miles and a few problems may exist. When my clutch is not depressed it makes a rattling sound but when depressed it stops. Also, when shifting into 2nd, clutch fully depresssed it makes a clunk/grind sound, sometimes shifting into 3rd and 4th it isn't so smooth.

Acme South Brunswick Nissan gave some push back on the issues saying they will monitor it but have not ruled out replacing.

Again, I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me. ie: what to say, how your tranny was acting etc

Thanks!

taking forever to arrive so finally got new 'box.
Grinding started when shifting 3rd to 5th.
Hopefully will be the only replacement needed....

Transmission replaced at 9k miles, grinding in 6th gear. Nissan replaced it under warranty. Apparently I also had a worn flywheel and clutch cover which I had to pay for myself. Weak.

When I had mine replaced @ 17k miles, they replaced the clutch and flywheel at no charge. I would fight them on that. How is clutch gone @ 9k miles?? You would have to be totally beating on it beyond belief or have never driven manual before. Even then, I think it would last over 9k miles.
