At the dealer right now. They've been looking at it for an hour. They think it's an interior problem and has nothing to do with the suspension. Seems weird to me though because it's definitely more difficult to reproduce when there's a passenger in the car. This is irritating! Perhaps I'll be calling customer service after this... I'll keep you all updated...

Dealer ordered the following parts and says this should fix the issue. Service manager mentioned they've seen this before.

We'll see. (I'm not 100% confident from everything else i've read however these are the same parts SOZ listed and said it corrected the problem)

If this does work mabe you can request all of these be replaced at the same time.

Parts on order for repair through dealer

1 - E6B10-CF40C Absorber Kit - SH
1 - 56218-AG000 - Bush-Rear Shock
1 - 55322-AL500 - Bracket Assy-SH
1 - 55323-AR00A - Tube - RR - Mounting
1 - 55338-AL500 - Seal-Shock ABSO
1 - 55269-4U00A - Nut

I do believe the noise is coming from both driver and passenger side however it's REALLLY bad on the passenger side. Hopefully this fixes it, if it's gone from the passenger side and still on the driver side i'll have them do the same thing over there

Wish me luck.

You're the third person to have these parts ordered. I think this is the solution here. I will be replacing all of these on my Z too.

I hope this is it. It looks like captfantastic had a combination of these parts replaced at different times, it may be the solution is changing everything simultaneously.

I'll update when the parts are installed, probably (hopefully) next weekend.

Is your Z still in warranty? If not, how much will the parts and replacements run you?

Still under warranty, however you can look up the part numbers on the courtesy parts site.

I had all those parts replaced at the same time and still have the noise. I don't see what timing would have to do with it, but the strut gaskets that were discussed by others were replaced a few weeks ago, with NO effect.. It DID go away for a couple of months when both struts were replaced and then came back....I don't understand it. The suspension must at least affect the problem, anyway.

I'm open to anything and still hope that Russell from NCS calls me back soon. My warranty is running out.

Anyone seriously want to get in on a class action? Or at least call Nissan and tell them. I keep hearing about how they've never heard of this problem..

good luck to all!

Won't be working on the car until the end of the week, likely. It would be nice to see and hear if we have the same sounds though, I know I always say that, but it's pretty important for me.

Here it is, the sound that has been driving away at my sanity for the past 18 months now. Listen to this and tell me if this is what you guys hear when going over bumps.

That's the dreaded clunk!

well, hopefully these parts fixes it for me...I noticed that shocks, clunks and rattles are not covered on the nissan extended warranty.

They've heard of this...that's why those things are not covered. My other nissan extended warranty on my last Z did not say shocks and clunks weren't covered.

I have about 8k miles left on factory warranty. It will be in the shop alot before then if this isn't fixed.

If all else fails there is an independent shop by me that specializes in Z's and BMW's. I know (hope!!) they'll be able to figure it out.

I wonder if we switch to non stock suspension if it will alleviate?

As far as I can tell, it's the same! Good job. Is there a way to get this to NIssan CS? I'm still leaving messages and not hearing back.

BTW- for some reason, it reminds me of a metal tray hitting something just after the bump. Do you know what I mean?

Anyone still think it might be the latch of the hatch?

I'm still mystified by the fact that changing the struts on both sides got rid of it completely for a while and then it gradually came back.

Do any of you have a Nismo or other kind of spoiler?

I've tried lining the hatch with microfiber towels to see if it'll dampen the sound, but it changed nothing, which lead me to believe that perhaps it isn't related to the hatch. Our rear interior is very tricky because it has little sound deadening and it isn't closed off, so sounds from the outside sound like they're inside. Which is why I believe it could be a strut issue.

Before I take my car in my next test will be simple: I will remove the passenger side hatch strut and see if the noise continues. But because there is no play in the hatch when it's shut, I don't believe it to be the problem anymore. If it was the hatch, then the rattling would happen no matter which wheel gets hit - but it only happens when I hit a bump with the passenger rear wheel.

And no spoiler here.

My car is '07 and dealing with similiar issue here. It only makes noise when go over the bump or railroad. One time I had lots of stuffs loaded in the trunk, and the trunk lid was tight when I tried to close it, the noise went away.

The noise sounds similar to mine, but mine is a little more high pitched (more metalish sound) but that could just be from the compression/mic/audio/speaker changes.

I would rule out the suspension since it sounds like you guys are all (or most of you anyway) and I've already moved to coilovers (Tein Mono Flex). I took the dampers off last week and checked the nuts on top and they were both torqued appropriately. I even softened them up (was at 2 clicks away from full hard, moved to 12 clicks away from full hard so a 600% change) and the noise didn't change in pitch, oscillation, or occurrence.

New theory - something in the trunk lid, maybe the motor for the rear wiper? Anyone have all their rear components removed and still get this? I used to just ignore this but now I'm getting more and more frustrated with it.

well, if the parts my dealer is replacing works...it's suspension...if it comes back...something is faulty...parts or design.
