rattling/clunking in rear?
ok. I can't believe this. I just got off the phone with Russell from Nissan CS. I finally got hold of him.
Nissan says they've taken all reasonable steps and are unable to correct the problem. They cannot do anything else. Are they kidding!
I explained this was unacceptable and unbelieveable. He said he would have a supervisor call me back this week.
I cannot believe this. All they did was have a guy look at it for a few minutes (an "inspection"), tighten a few bolts, add some padding and leave. In other words, hardly anything.

I guess its time for me to chime in as well. 07 with 41k miles now. The noise I get is honestly unbearable. Its 10x worse than the clip someone put up. I literally could drive on a glass road and you would hear it. Every single second, without exaggeration, you hear the sound as long as the car is moving. I had a friend with an 08 that lives on the same road come for a ride and was like whoa man thats horrible. I thought it was from being rear ended in May. I do know the collision place took the whole hatch off, so I was going to go back to them but obviously this probably isn't their fault.
Ever since I put my stock cats on, I can hear it 10x more and I don't always feel like blasting the music to drown out the rattling. It sounds like the hatch is constantly hitting something. I'm going to have my friend drive it while I'm under the strut bar and try to pinpoint it.
Hopefully I'll be productive tomorrow and try to record it with my cell taped to the strut bar or carpet. I'll try driving down the street with the hatch open too.

Ok heres a clip, I taped a sock to the strut bar then my cell on top so it wouldn't vibrate. You can hear when I take it up to speed its just as bad as when I go slower.

Wow, that's even more annoying than what I have! And it sounds totally different too. Have you made adjustments to the latch mechanism? When it's really off it causes the hatch to rattle and vibrate a lot.
hmmm, his is something different.
Where are my freaking parts??? It's been almost two weeks.
this must be a widespread problem...with a parts shortage...they have to be taking a harder look into this or they're ignoring it because the 370's are out.

Yeah, does your latch open in one shot? Or do you need to press the button multiple times and grab the hatch? Also, does the trunk make a very solid and pronounced POP when you unlock it? Because it should.
Guys,
Firstly, I apologize if the below as been discussed and dismissed as the cause of the clunk at some previous point...
I have an 06 which I purchased in October of last year. I noticed the clunking soon after - didn't annoy me too much as I figured I would be able to track down the cause whenever I stripped the interior to install my stereo (it sounded to me like it was coming from somewhere inside the trim panels in the rear of the trunk.
I just got done installing my stereo, couldn't find anything obvious and the clunk is still there though not as loud as it was.
I decided to have a look underneath the rear of the car tonight for anything obvious. I know that the cretin who owned the car before me had a Nismo exhaust on the car at one point (that's not the reason he's a cretin - it's because he tore out his stereo, replaced it with the stock stereo but didn't screw the center console or dash back together - it was literally held in place with zip ties and tape...) so I figured, given the mess he'd made of the dash / console, there was a fair chance he'd screwed something up underneath the car when reinstalling the factory exhaust.
Anyway (sorry for dragging this on) - I again couldn't find anything obvious until I looked up into the rear bumper from underneath. There appears to be a large piece of high-impact foam which runs the width of the car within the cavity between the bumper and the rear chassis. It looks as if it might have originally been glued in place but mine is now loose - very loose - it basically seems to be rattling around in there. I'm convinced this is the cause of the clunk in my car. I'm going to try at the weekend to find a way to hold it firmly in place and drive around for a while to figure out if this is indeed the cause.
I thought you guys might want to check this on your cars so that you can also rule it in or out.
I believe my clunk is not so loud now as I installed a 12" sub in a Zenclosure in the trunk. I didn't add any Dynamat to the trunk but I believe the Zenclosure base which replaces the carpeted section in the trunk is blocking out at least some of the clunk...
Anyway - let me know if you find the same issue with the foam block in the bumper
Thanks,
Davy.

I've been watching this forum for a couple of months now as that noise almost drove me nuts. I have an '08 and the noise is more pronounced on the passenger side but does eventually start to happen on the driver side.
After two previous trips to the dealer, first was the "tightening" solution, second was the "loose exhaust clip", I mentioned some of the causes I read here and they agreed to look at the suspension. The tech ordered this part (2 - E6B10-CF40C Absorber Kit) and I got my car back yesterday. I have hit every bump possible and there is no longer a noise.
The comment left on the service ticket states "internal valving sticking open causing the shock to leak and make noise". If that is true and a possible OEM issue, I wonder how long before the new ones start doing that.

Back with my update. It's definitely not the hatch after all. I went out to go do the latch adjustment, and well moving it forward for me was definitely not a good idea. It made the hatch have a massive gap when closed and tons of play when you pressed on the hatch. I moved the latch all the way opposite and it pops fine with no play. I've had to reach my finger under to grab it before but most likely when its colder, I rarely use the hatch.
Anyway since my hatch shocks are weaker and its cold out, I still tried to drive down my culdesac with the hatch all the way open. I could only get up to near 10mph because the shocks would give out from the momentum and wind I guess. So I still heard the sound with it fully open though!.
MF, anyway I started pushing down all around the rear suspension, sure enough I heard the noise coming from.... the driver side strut area. I was using my full body weight to keep pushing down and it would only make the sound on the driver side from pushing down, but not the other side. It wasn't as loud since I'm a lightweight but its definitely the same sound that comes around when I start driving.

Still waiting for one more part to come in...the rear bushing.
I asked the parts guy why the long delay and he mentioned a big backorder on rear shocks and bushings.
Hmmmmmmmmm, I wonder why?

Good news this weekend-found and fixed the noise in the Z myself.
Turns out it was the hatch-some play in it allowed it to bounce and hit the body. It's NOT the struts themselves, but the hatch bouncing/wiggling laterally and hitting the body.
I took some of it apart looking for play in the hatch latch, but there didn't seem to be any. But I noticed the hatch itself had some play in it when you pushed it all the way up, even with the bolts that hold the struts on tightened all the way. It's a big, heavy hatch with not a lot to stabilize it and it's at a very low angle.
So, I plugged up the three places where it might bounce and hit the body with FUNTAC! It was perfect for the job, at least as a temp fix. After damping all the spots where it might hit the body, I went driving. over 40 miles so far -DEAD QUIET! Now why couldn't Nissan figure that out? I brought it in 15 times. Those were entire DAYS that they had to figure out the problem and they didn't do anything. I'm no mechanic, so the only difference is that I gave a sh-t
Now I just need to find the best way to fix it permanently. the Fun Tac is great to work with, but I'm sure it won't stay on. So I have to find some kind of silicon or foam, etc.
pics attached!

Sweet mother of God!! IT IS GONE! It's f*cking gone! I could kiss you, captfantastic! I went and hit the hardest and worst potholes I could possibly find. I hit them all. All of them. Nothing.
I'm so happy I could cry.
