Default Engine Whine......

I seem to have an engine whine that has developed lately. I've only got 1350 miles on the car and am really unsure what it is (AC compressor, etc.?). It shows up around 2500RPM and changes pitch with engine RPM and occurs throughout all gears. I'm getting ready to take the thing in for it's 1000 mile tuneup (it's free but wtf do they do at 1000 miles). Is it a belt that needs adjusting, etc.?

There is a TSB for AC whine. My whines real loud with AC on...turn it off and it goes away. They are looking at it now.

Well it isn't the AC unfortunately. It happens whether the AC is on or not. Any other thoughts? Transmission? If so, what would it be?

i have a sound that happens at around 2000 and 3000 rpm through all gears ac on or off. sounds like a different but wrong exhaust note? don't know if that is the right way to describe it or not. i can only make the sound at about say 1950 to 2000 rpm them it goes away till 2950 or so. although it will stay if i hold the rpms at 2950. taking it in tomorrow.

Mine doesn't quite go away so much as it get's drowned out by the engine noise. I'm calling them tomorrow about the 1000 mile service, I guess I'll have them look into this as well or if it really get's unbearable, force them to do something.

I have this problem, and happens whether the clutch is engaged or not, so i doubt it is the tranny. I think it may be an exhaust leak.

acjet -
can you please give me what your dealer actually called the problem. I will be seeing my dealer next week and would like to have that resolved.

thanks
-jim

jimRHIT- i'll let every one know once i get the car back.... still waiting on the exhaust, hu and amp. should be in on mon or tues. i don't want to post that it was an exhaust prob until i verify it was fixed. mine did not sound like an exhaust leak though. just a vibration at a different freq than other rpms. it was quite loud and had no prob recreating the sound. it happened every time at the same rpms.

there is an exhaust related turbine-like sound that happens from air intake resonance from about 2000-3000 rpm (maybe a bit lower)
personally, I like it.
Has no rotating mechanical source, just the tubes playing a tune like an organ.

johnsz- i know what you're talking about but this wasn't the case for mine. only happened for about 50 rpm at the 2000 and 3000 mark. totally different sound.

hokiez- what about yours

Mine still makes the noise, no change really in frequency although I think it has expanded it's range a little higher into the RPM band. Just a whirr/whine almost like a quiet whistle but it changes with RPM frequency and is absent below 2500RPM.

I've been out of town lately so I will be at the dealer Sat. for a Z meet anyways so I'll ask them while I'm there (service is open till noon Sat.)

Any guesses?

got the car back today...

the seat rocking, clicking popping or whatever you want to call it was fixed with the washers. i know the tsb is for the man. seats but it works for the powered ones too.

they pulled the dash and did a lot of tapeing rattles seem to be gone. for now at least.

grease streak fixed again with the same tsb. we'll see if it works over time.

rattle between 2950 and 3000 was fixed with the replacment of the muff. and a pipe.

amp was replaced. sounds better as everyone has stated. not the greatest but better.

hu. ahhh the good old hu. was replaced. dealer said they played numerous cd's without a prob. i got in the car and of course once again check cd. this was with both purchased cd's and burned. took the rep about 45 min of playing with it to finally get one to work.

noticed the start of feathering again.

i am done. paperwork went to the lawyers today.
