P0340- Camshaft position sensor, hard starting and CEL
My 04 Z threw a CEL P03040 two days ago. I cleared the code with a scanner and all seemed well for a 3 hour trip. The only symptoms is the car is hard to start and is throwing the code consistently after starting. Driving seems fine but initially when the CEL light popped up i felt a loss of power so I am assuming that the ECU went into "limp mode". I am so glad i purchased my scan gauge odb II reader.. its saved me countless hassels being able to clear CEL's..
After some research P03040 indicates issues with the camshaft position sensor - bank 1 Per the FSM (on the passenger side near the battery). I pulled the sensor and inspected it per the FSM and it seems ok. I don't have a multi-meter to test it further so I am gonna just replace it. I found this
http://www.z1motorsports.com/350_g35...oducts_id=4093
which is $20 cheaper than what the local parts store wants I am guessing its better to stay with OEM? Just wanted to get some input and clarify if this fixes the issue for anyone else who has the same problem. It sucks that the 03's got this sensor the other two sensors (crank and bank 2) replaced under warranty-recall as it seems a constant problem with Z's in general from the posts i have read.
71k miles 04 base BTW
Thanks

Its too dam cold here to do it during the week. I hate living in an apartment with no garage. Looking to finish it Saturday. I had issues getting the harness off and don't see a green tab like the service manual has. I couldn't feel my fingers and didn't want to break it so im gonna wait til i have daylight and warmth
Got this fixed a week or so back, I don't drive the Z too much as i am a tech with a company vehicle so im guessing its good. I changed the sensor and drove around for about 20 mins. Haven't thrown a code yet. Worst part is the stupid clip it has to be pushed in to pulled off.
These Nissans are harder to run the OBD-II monitors. By simply clearing the computer, the problem isn't fixed and the CEL will obviously come back once the computer regains it's memory. If you replaced the sensor though, you should be fine.

I find that hard to believe as i had a throttle position error code that i fixed with the pedal/ignition relearning method, once i did that and cleared the code it never came back. Also when i cleared the code prior to replacing the sensor it would only come back on after the car had rough idle symptoms.
I had the same problem and replaced the sensor. Pretty easy to do. Fixed it up just fine.
Somewhere inbetween I decided to clean the throttle body, what a mistake. Now that code won't go away. lol.

Theres a throttle position learning thing you have to do if you moved the butterfly on the throttle body, that will remove the code. I had the same issue after cleaning the plenum when installing my spacer. Search the code and u should find the procedure somewhere on the board
Code is still not back ran over 50 miles with the new Cam sensor. Running like new. Just thought I would share! I bought a scan gauge which is mounted in the car its awsum and has saved my azz twice now by letting me clear these codes myself one of the best $100 mods i can say i have added plus having the digital display of ecu info is nice aswell.
jebz - thanks for following up with your resolution to the problem.
Can you tell me if the P0340 is only for Bank 1 (with a separate error code for Bank 2)? Or is it the same P0340 for either side?
Thanks.

Don't know if you guys are aware that there is a recall on the camshaft and crank sensors, they will replace both for free. This applies to 03's only, and only for a very limnited range of VIN's. I think the recall definitely needs to be expanded to include all 03's.

Hey guys, not meaning to necrosis post but I'm getting this code now. From what I read I wouldn't be posting if it wasn't for, well I'll try and explain it now. I swear I hear a tick in the motor and the last time I changed the oil I could swore there was some shavings. Now I have this error code. Do you guys think there could be more to the problem, as in, could it be the cam and the computer thinks it's a CPM?
