Hey guys,

So awhile ago I started to notice a very high pitched noise coming from my engine bay while my car was at idle. Didn't think to much of it initially and it went away for awhile.

Fast forward to today and its become and persistent issue. Now-a-days when ever my 2003 Base model is a idle the car will make this high pitched noise. Popped open the hood and it most likely seems like some sort of belt/pulley issue, although the car runs great (besides my clunking in the rear) with any issues.

Before replacing belts try belt-ease.

 

I have had this problem in the past (not on my Z) and it wound up being due to a bad tensioner bearing. As they begin to wear out they can make noise; at engine speeds this noise can translate to a whine. It might be worth removing the belt and checking for any bearing play on all belt - driven components.

Tighten up your belts, check for cracking or glazing, u might have to replace em if necessary.

 

i have had the same problem. at start up mostly in the cold my car screeches terrible till it warms up a bit. I just changed the belts over the summer but could they be too tight i havent noticed the screeching until it has gotten cold and only happens when i leave the car in the cold for a couple of hours (it stays in my garage at night)
are my belts too tight or is it this belt tensioner thing? it only happens at start up and quits after 10 seconds or a few revs

Belt tension adjustment is not necessary, as it is automatically adjusted by drive belt auto-tensioner.

That only counts for the HR engines...OP's engine is a DE

 

I was wondering what that was about because I sure remember adjusting mine! LOL!! Thanks for clearing the DE HR thing up. I am surprised all of them don't use auto-tensioners.

Haha sorry guys been going through a bit

So after tightening, spraying, etc. It turns out that Blackzizzle was correct.

After getting the car in the air and removing the belts, it did infact turn out to be the belt tensioner bearing being slightly worn.

Part replaced for pretty cheap and issue solved.
