ok ppl, just wondering if anyone else out there has a crunchy 2nd gear, from 1st to 2nd my 2nd gear occasionally makes this crunch sound, like in my first tranny, im beginning to think this is a common prob, because my 2nd tranny at <200 miles is crunching like my first. is anyone else experiencing this? and what r u guys doin about this?
also, does anyone out there actually have a smooth flawless gear box? just curious, cuz on my 2nd tranny already, its not starting to look good, the fact that nissan hasnt issued out a tsb.

when you are shifting to second gear, make sure you don't shift too fast... also, make sure the clutch pedal all the way down...
I had the same problem, but I had to change the way I shift with 350z.. it's okay now..

yea i tried that once, it got to a point where i grinded the gears cuz i shifted too slow, kinda weird but it actually happaned. i was driving late at nite tryin to understand the prob, and so i tried different methods of shifting, one was shifting slower than i would usually, and the gears grinded like mad...so i'll try to find where the sweet spot is, and take it from there...thnkx

I have the same problem shifting into second and something even third. It seems to gind more when the car is cold I've found. There is no way a brand new car should be making any grinding noises when shifting. We shouldn't have to shift super slow just so we don't grind either. Not sure why there isn't a TSB out yet. Maybe people haven't complained to Nissan North America enough yet?? I hope this gets resolved.

I think you should take the car to the dealer and have them look at it. I get grinds on 2nd gear only when speed shifting.. if I shift slow, it will be fine... I think my problem is with synchro...
Does dealer warranty synchro problem? or will they say it's driver error?

had the exact same problem, 2nd gear grind when shifting fast. The dealer replaced my transmission with no questions asked. All I had to do is demonstrate it to a Nissan Tech.
New transmission was ordered and installed for $0.
The problem is gone!

Same problem with my '04. I took it in, tech couldnt duplicate (just my luck), but they're 'calling Nissan' to see if there's any known problems or suggestions. Still waiting to hear back.

I just got the latest tranny fix. (my 3rd tranny) the one with the clutch pedal. My complaints with my 2nd tranny were that is was too notchy, grind in 3rd gear and this "2nd gear crunch" that you guys are talkin about.
With this new transmission I STILL have this NASTY 2nd gear crunch. The new tranny has a smoother 3rd and 4th gears... but the throw is much longer. The crunching in 2nd mostly occurs when shifting slowly... but I DO NOT think this is acceptable at all. I loved the way the original shifter felt (del. 9/26/02). All these new shifters I have had make me HATE the Z.
Crunching @ 2nd gear shouldn't be a design property...
and what the hell is up with Nissan's quality control, or better yet... their lack of!

I have the 2nd gear "crunch" . Makes me feel better I am not alone but worse in the fact that this is a problem. My thinking is that as long as the engine keeps running smoothly, I can't complain. Afterall this is a Nissan, not a Porsche.

I have 11,000 miles on my Z. I let a friend drive it the other day. Everytime he shifted into third it went "crunch". This never happened to me when driving. We found out that he was shifting too fast. Really throwing the car into gear quickly. I tried this also and the same "crunch" occured. I don't think this should happen just because you shift a little too fast. for now, I think I will not take it into the dealer unless it starts acting different.
