Default Hit and Run

Hey guys don't know if this is the right section to post so I apologize in advance.
Basically I was involved in a hit-and-run accident almost half a year ago but thought the damage was minor so I wouldn't have to file a police report and just went off to work and planned on claiming it later to insurance. I have no proof of who hit the car, there are 4 holes in the rear bumper from the persons license plate with faint blue numbers that can't be interpreted, also the drivers side taillight has been chipped. I have full coverage including Collision with Geico, and I was told by a friend that I couldn't claim the hit-and-run if I didn't file a police report on the day of the accident at that spot.. just wondering if this was true. I plan on filing a claim, but people are telling me that there's no hope, the damage already looks like its been a while. If anyone has any prior experience with this kind of incident, any help or advice would be appreciated.. thanks !

You can still get your car repaired. Just file a claim with your insurance, get the car fixed and pay your deductible. End of story..............
