time for me to post ***** a little but unlike others I will contribute instead of posting 2 words to increase my post count.

OP....just drop a new motor in if you can easily find one. The $1500-$2000 will only fix the noise and who knows what else is around the corner with that motor. So sad to say that VQ motors are not BULLETPROOF like nissan wants you to belief. Get a low mileage used motor with like 50k on it and just drop it in. It will cost you like $1500-$2000 and it is much easier to swap out a long block than tear a block down to rebuild and hope that everyone who touched your motor did not slack or of half as$ it.

Here is some info for you that I helped a G35 / 350z member with on pricing motors. In my opinion a crappy crapola VQ motor is only worth $700-$1200 in working condition and $300-$500 for parts only.

What causes this and is it a precursor to something else or just annoying? The last car I owned had sticky valve lifters which ticked like crazy - it was a reasonably priced fix - def not even close to $1500 . It seems a little major to junk the engine for a ticking noise...??
