Default Lost KEY!! Help!

Everyone

For starts, i've looked around a lot and can't seem to find an answer so apologies in advance if this has been addressed.

Over this past weekend I lost my only key to my 03 Z. I have an ebay flip key spare and figured okay, all i'll need to do is go to a dealer with the blank flip key and my registration and i'll be fine.. after calling around, i have heard the following various stories:

1. Downtown LA Nissan - Says they need the Key ID which they don't have to make a key.. says only the dealer from which the car was purchased has that.

2. San Bernardino Nissan - Dealer where the car was purchased from (not by me) says they can get the Key ID but i have to be there in person with my ID/reg.. sadly this dealer is over from an hour from where i work and almost 2 hours from where I live.. they claim the cant give out the KEY ID over the phone no matter what.

3. Santa Monica Nissna - Claims they can do it but i'd have to have the car towed to them AND pay 125 just for the programming. They say they need the car there in person to complete the programming?? this was the first time i had heard that they physically needed the car there to do this.

Any help is greatly appreciated... the big question is what do i need to do to key this key Cut and get my car back on the road asap?? and shouldnt any dealer be able to do this?

Any help appreciated.

Option #2 > 1 & 3 & not having a key
get a friend to take you. drive twice the limit and cut the time down to 30 mins from your work.

imo, they are right not to give the KeyID over the phone.

HMM.. another big question now is does the dealer need to physically have the car in order to program the new key to the car?? The SB dealer didn't mention this as a stipulation.. anyone know either way on this?

I believe the dealer has to have the car at their location to hook the car up to the computer to program your car for the new key. I would suggest getting 2 keys cut and programmed at the same time. That way you will always have a spare if you lose another.

also, if you have ebay flip key, chances are it doesn't have a transponder chip in it so getting it cut won't let u start the car.. it'll just be a door key. u need to open the oem key and remove the chip and place it in the new flip key housing for it to work.

good luck!

Do you just have the factory alarm?

Couldn't you go to the dealer or any Nissan dealer with the VIN#, registration and proof of ID, have them make you the key without the FOB programmed. Go home, unlock the door with the physical key, and drive the car to the dealer, then get it programmed? If you want to just bring everything, Title too. And don't take that BS about you needing to go to the dealer you bought the car at. This is 2011, they're systems are all connected.

the car physically needs to be there because they change the code on all the keys and the car whenever a new key needs to be programmed. you should definitely consider getting a second key while you're at it.

This is what I was originally hoping, but according to them all the key will do is unlock my door and not start the car.. they claim there's a chip in the key itself which needs to be programmed to be inline with the ignition somehow?? I just really didn't want to have to pay for a tow (no AAA, i'm an idiot) if it's not absolutely needed..

this is the key i have.. it DOES mention needing the dealer, but i was more under the impression it was for the cutting part only..

anyone else have experience with one of these keys?

I'm not sure if our cars had that, or if all years had that. Looks like you have an 03'. Anyone know for sure if all year Z's came with a chip in the key factory for the actual ignition?

Also, make sure you write down the IDs and keep it somewhere in your house next time

All years of the Z came with a chip in the key. It is part of the anti-theft system built into the car.

Just your local lock smith, google or facebook. He came out to my house when i lost all my cars keys. Paid him off the books too for a hell of a deal and even programed my ebay flip key.

HMM.. that is a damn good call.. and i don't have to worry about them not having the "Key ID" or whatever it is?? and what about this transponder related stuff? They can have me good to go? Sounds a hell of a lot easier than towing the car to a dealer and f'ing around with that.. how much did it end up costing you?

Thanks for the replies!

40 bucks... but like i said, that was off the books and a good hook up. The only thing is, once you program as many keys as he does at that moment, other keys wont work unless they get programmed again with the new ones. In case you find it. It more less programming your car to read the keys, not programming the keys. Thats why whatever dealer has to have your car there to program it.

Get him to make you 2 keys. One for a back up and one to cut the transponder out of for your flip.

Are your doors locked or is your flip key cut, or will he have to make a key from picking with the tumbler, cause that will be a lil more. regardless, its the easiest cheapest way. Only downside is your key isnt OEM, unless you buy one first, but once again, i think you said you had a flip to setup.

I haven't had good luck with ebay keys. They seem to lose the key id after awhile and then the car won't start. When it comes to my car starting I trust genuine nissan keys only. I at least would keep one genuine nissan key just in case the other loses the key id.

The others above are correct.

-Car has to be at nissan to program key with car
-Some locksmiths have the scan tools to program keys
-key has to have transponder in key fob in order to work

I just had it done. $70 for an OEM key and $50 for the stealership to program the new one and to re-program my old one. Yes, the car has to be there and they get the info from Nissan.
