Default After getting a new exhaust i smell gas during start up

I have an 05 nissan 350z with Greddy Spectrum Elite - SE (http://www.andysautosport.com/nissan...d00247355.html) I bought it from a friend and he installed it for me. I smell gas near the exhaust after i start up the car. Once i start driving it seems to go away. I told my friend he said that its normal because the air flow more smoothy? I'm not sure so i was just wondering if anyone knew what is wrong with it. I don't notice any leaks in my drive way nor is the engine like on. I research seeing some called as running rich? or something not sure if thats it. I only use premium gas. No gas smell inside the car. I also got a intake installed K&N (http://store.knfilters.com/search/pr...x?Prod=57-6013) The car does sound louder when starting and turning off the car even tho its normal lol just to let u guys know but when i turn it off it makes some vroom/bump noise it actually sounds cool to me. It seems to be loud because my dad can hear it from the house and asked y my car so loud. Been driving it for a while now. The performance is great though. The stock exhaust didn't have the gas smell. feel free to reply and thanks for reading!

YOu probably have an exhaust leak, do you get the smell anytime you are parked at idle?

Should not smell gasoline. Catalytic converter should burn all unburned fuel.

a. Exhaust leak before catalytic converter.
b. Catalytic converter no longer working.
c. Catalytic converter function properly - Fuel mixture way too rich for catalytic converter to cope.

BTW a rich fuel mixture will take a toll on catalytic converters.

Ur parents dident notice u changed it I remember when I was 17 when I first got my z 3 months in I put on test pipes and had to creap out of town my mom and dad would call me and tell me to slow down. Cause they could hear me comming and I was like 3 miles away now I can be herd from like 6lol but it's all good I'm only 20 still live at home and work nights an hour away so it let's my moms know I'm home safe when she hears me comming. Also just tell them the intake and exhaust helps you get better gas milage just get a tune with it I make 299.9whp and get between 25 and 30 mpg high way

I had a Greddy SE and short ram intakes on my car. I never noticed a gas smell after installing either. The SE is just a muffler so it will not change A/F and I highly doubt filters will do much either.

Get your A/F checked, if it's good then you may have an exhaust leak or bad cat like David said

Also the SE is not much louder than stock so your dad should not be able to hear it from any further than with stock exhaust. Either your friend installed some test pipes/HFC without telling you or you're revving to much to hear your new exhaust.

Sound clip of mine for refrence:

Did you use old gaskets when installing the exhaust or new ones? Could be from those. Also ive read that aftermarket exhausts get hotter than stock and don't have heat shields, so a funny smell could be attributed to paint curing. Don't know how well that story holds though. Just something i read.

He just installed the muffler and the intake. When i drive into my drive way i dont gas it at all lol but when i turn off the car u can hear the muffler. The sound is like when u start the car kinda. My dad probably was doing something quiet to be able to hear it.

I forgot something to mention about the car. I bought it from a guy that lives near a beach and the stock exhaust was rusted as u can see. can it be the reason why gas leak out because the rust made it impossible for the exhaust and the tube to connect without any gab between because of the rust? http://s1087.photobucket.com/albums/...20106-1422.jpg

He also took this piece out because my car was in a fender bender by the first owner and the muffler would slightly hit this piece while driving on bumpy road Name: ?action=view&current=IMG00084-20120106-1422.jpg#!oZZ3QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs1087.phot.jpg

Put on some heat resistant gloves, stick some rags in the exhaust pipes and hold tight while engine is idling, if exhaust is leaking it will get louder at source. Be careful when you do this, if you can't hear well enough have someone give it a little gas while you are holding the rags.

And please to be removing the Nismo badge from engine cover, thanks.

These corroded ends may not seal properly. You could clean 90 percent of the corrosion with a wire brush.

I think i just found out wat happened. Because the cold air intake was installed by my friend didn't unplug battery and now the check engine light is on now.... and service engine soon light as well... What do i do now? drive to a mechanic? dont drive the car at all until problem is solve? my friend has my oem intake.... I also researched online and some said the intake may have been damage while re installing and would have to replace it? i sure hope not..

This just went off the derp end. I don't think you have the basic mechanical know-how to figure this out, take it to a reputable mechanic. It's ok to drive as long as the check engine light isn't flashing.
