You might want to get a mod to change the thread title first.

Is this your first manual transmission car?

Why would you be at 1K-2K rpm in second and third gear as opposed to down shifting?

no its not but i meant like when im at a light i start in 1st gear and hit about 2,500-3000 then shift and so on...i like to shift around 3k when im tryn to make my gas last lol....but in those low rpms it rattles...not trying to get flamed or anything...but it didn't make that noise before..i had the car for for 3 years now and it just started like 2-3weeks ago now

I would not recommend shifting out of 1st at 2500 rpm. You're almost stalling your engine. That is what you are hearing. You are shifting too early and it is not saving you on gas mileage. Gas mileage is a factor of throttle usage, not low RPM.

What would you recommend shifting out of first at?

I am just curious. I shifted higher when I drove a 4cylinder Cobalt that had no torque until boost but this car has much much more torque.

For best gas mileage, you want to maintain a low and steady throttle usage. I've also had my best MPG results by keeping the car's RPM within the range where the torque is highest (3200-3500 on my car). I believe this is because when the torque is highest, it takes less throttle to maintain your speed.

So there isn't anything wrong with your car, you just need to adjust how you are driving it.

Depends on what you're trying to do...

I shift at 6000 rpms when driving fast. Otherwise I shift anywhere from 4000-5000 if driving around in my normal "quick" fashion. If I'm cruising on the interstate for a long trip, I try to use whichever gear is appropriate to keep me in the sweet spot of the torque curve. If I'm driving around town, I could care less about my MPG - it's a sports car, I want to enjoy the feel of it, not stress over the gas mileage.

But I have the same problem and that's no matter when I shift I still hear the rattle from 1k-2k.. I thought it was a rod or something really bad but its not effecting my driving so it can't be just from when your shifting..

Does it sound like gravel being vibrated in a metal pan? I've been told this is normal .... Something about the flywheel design if I remember what my mechanic friend told me correctly... Worried me when I first picked mine up too, but I've heard it on other Zs now that I know to listen for it
