Default Gas smell when starting car

When starting the car from a cold start, for about 15 seconds I smell I gas like smell, then it just goes away. I told the mechanic at the nissan dealer this and he said it was normal for the first few seconds after a cold start. I have a 2006 nissan 350z auto. Just wondering if anyone can elaborate on this at all. Thanks.

It is normal. Your system is cold so it is not buring fuel effectively. Further, the unburnt fuel is escaping (hence the smell) because the catalytic converters are not hot yet. The cats' job is to burn the unburnt fuel.

I am very OCD with this car, so any smell or noise I tend to get real jumpy about. So when I turn the car on the first 30 seconds or so it's normal to smell a little gas smell, it is just a result of unburned gas from the cat? I would love to hear a few more replies just confirming this is not a problem. Thanks
