Question Knocking/Ticking Increases with RPM

Hey guys I've got an 03 with around 80k and I'm not sure what this knocking/tickingnoise is.

I searched all over here and other forums/sites for ideas and solutions but I can't figure it out.

The noise increases with rpm. I've got a vacuum leak from the plenum because of the missing bolts and silicone so you can just ignore that unless somehow that has something to do with it. Also the cold air intake is not connected in this video.

I got an oil change about 2000 miles before this happened. I checked my oil when I started hearing this and i was 2.8 quarts low for some reason out of no where but really I should have been checking my oil more.

So I Changed my oil after this using 4 quarts 5w-30 and 1 quart lucas and added fuel injector cleaner. I removed/inspected timing chain tensioner and checked the spring and tightness

Engine codes reading random misfire and one bad o2 sensor at the exhaust manifold (upstream drivers side).

Theres also an exhaust leak somewhere...the cars really loud.

Any ideas? And can I drive this thing as is to work tomorrow?

Video I recorded of the sound:

I wouldn't drive the car like that. From the sounds of it though, sounds like motor is all ready damaged. Also, rtv gasket sealer for the plenum? Never saw that before, it has a gasket all ready, why the added mess?

I got the spacer used with no hardware or gasket so I had to use that.

You think it's something brutal? Any chance its an exhaust leak in the headers?

You are right about one thing.
It is brutal.
Think your engine has some severe damage.
All the oil changes, additives are not gonna change anything.
And this happened,"out of nowhere"?

Burning that much oil can't be good and in sure an exhaust leak won't cause you to burn oil.

Alright GL thanks for the response I'll do some searches on that now.

Also I wonder if it's the timing chain being loose but I messed with the tensioner today and it seemed to be in there tight.

I know that tensioner needs good oil pressure so maybe my pump is shot or somehow the engine oil pressure isn't at the right amount.

Also the oil light flashes when my car gets close to stalling, which it does whenever I'm not on the throttle (maybe cuz of the vacuum leaks on the plenum). Then it goes away once I get back up close to 1rpm.

Maybe a bent valve? Any who, it's not good. Have you done a compression test? Might want to do that too, if your getting random misfires you might be loosing a cylinder.

If you GOTTA drive it,put in some heavier oil& STP or equivilant.
Drive at low RPMS or,until it gives out.
Sure would not take it on a trip.

Whatever it is, the engine is 100% done... kill the ignition and pull it before the noisy rod ejects itself out the block and you have no usable core.

Alright I still want a shop to check it out but from what I've read on this site it seems like a lot of times its cheaper to swap engines then it is to rebuild one. I found a guy who said he'd do the swap for $800 and I found some used ones on ebay for under 2 grand but I don't understand how they ship those beasts. I guess I would have to have them send to the shop but I'm sure I'd have to sign.

Otherwise I'll have someone get the engine for me and do the swap all at once.

The thing is there's other repairs needed on the car and I'm wondering if I should just sell it. How much have you seen these cars go for when they need a new engine?

You just have to put a pencil to it.If a engine swap(used engine)plus the labor will make the car "new"...add years of driving it may make sense. If you have other fixes like the tranny, brakes, exhaust system&cosmetic stuff like paint&interior,it may not make economic sense. They crate the engine and send it by a freightline on a pallet. Its done everyday.UPS Freight handles this as many others.Add the freight into the cost.Selling a car with a blown engine, you are not gonna get much since the usual lion's share of a salvage value is the engine.

Whats all the red stuff on your engine? It doesn't seem like you kept up with oil.

IDK why you would burn that much in only 2k miles. Seems like a bad cylinder or rod.

The red is silicone from when I installed the plenum spacer because I didn't have a gasket. I don't know why it was burning that much oil but I bought the car with a rebuilt title so I'm not sure what happened to it before me.

It's got other problems but I feel like I wasted a lot of money on the car if I get rid of it but I guess I could look for a non-salvage title car. It's just gonna suck going to a car with less power than this thing I'm so used to it I want something similar.
