Default Trunk springs not allowing your hatch to open first try? Easy fix

Here is a simple DIY on how to fix your trunk springs to allow them to lift the hatch in one try and without helping the hatch up with one hand.

What's needed?
1)Trunk hatch springs
2)2 Nickels
3)2 Pennies
4)5 Minutes

1st) Take apart each hatch spring as shown

2nd) Insert the nickel followed by the penny (1 nickel and 1 penny per spring )

Size: 35.5 KB

3rd) Compress the springs so that the rubber will pop into place.

Lastly) Install back onto the Z and now you won't be frustrated when both hands aren't available and have to put down what your carrying to open the hatch.

Hope this helps you

Actually, I like the visual tutorial. I've never had problems with my trunk lid, but I've always read about the problem.

Thanks for posting!

My NISMO V1 wing makes it a complete PITA to open my trunk, I'm actually going to order a set of these Z1 UHP struts instead though

Glad it is able to help some people. Probably wouldn't have made it if i would've found the original thread that was posted 9 years ago, so far it has worked out though which is good.

I have the HP struts on my car, and had the UHP struts before that. They raise the trunk good, but I still have the issue with popping it. I even bought new rubber stoppers from Nissan and it didn't help at all, so I gave up lol.

^^ Oh... Oh… , That’s not what you wanted to see since adding additional coins can crease or dent the sheet metal. I wouldn’t add more than two coins. The springs continue to fatigue, so you need to replace the hatch springs after the coin trick fails. --Spike

Do not use 2 nickels or any combination thicker than 3 pennies, you will end up with a nice dent in your hatch; ask me how I know.
