You really shouldn't ever have to. There are actually multiple LEDs in that assembly, and of the whole unit isn't working, I'd be looking at wiring or fuse issues. That trim panel around the top of the hatch just pulls off, like all the interior panels, so I'd start there and check for voltage at the input of the light assembly.
