Default Fuel Tank fill only half?

So, i bought my '06 350z used. When I bought it, the guys there never filled the car, only because it was sitting there, and didnt need a full tank. When I purchased it, I went to the gas station, and filled it $40 to full. Little did I know that half the tank was basically on the ground of gas. I didnt really think much about it. So I hop in, and my fuel tank is only half full. Now my question is...Is it my fuel tank that would be doing this? Or would it be the fuel lines? Reguardless, im deciding to pay the Nissan Dealer roughly $700-$800, to fix it. Do I have any other options?

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to say. Did half your gasoline purchased flow onto the ground? If so, did you not notice all the fuel under your car? Or are you trying to say the fuel stopped flowing at half a tank and you were under the impression the tank was full?

+1 check to see were its coming from first. Its prob. spilling over cause it full. it seems like your gauge isnt reading right.

I had this problem a few years back. I fulled the tank, but it said half full.

This is a fairly well-discussed issue in the Z forums. Some of the cars (mine included) have problems filling all the way. The probable cause (covered in a TSB) is the filler neck's vent tube getting clogged. This part can be replaced and might fix the problem; people have mixed results.

Other solutions are to try different gas stations until you find a pump that your car likes (believe me, this works... each pump is different). Also, try going slow when you're pumping gas into your car. Go with the slowest setting and don't pump at full blast. Pull the pump out and re-position it if it keeps shutting off.

For some reason, I've found that my car never has problems drinking Chevron gas and I've never had issues with filling at Chevron stations. I tried Costco gas a couple of times and it would never fill past 3/4 full. The same thing happened at Shell. I'm not endorsing Chevron (though it is good gas), but for some reason, our tanks like their pumps.

Also, if it's a hot day (and I'm not B.S.'ing you here), it's going to have more problems filling to full. Try filling it first thing in the morning if it's going to be hot in the afternoon. Again, this has to do with the venting system in the tanks. There are two tanks that are connected together. Unfortunately, due to backpressure, sometimes gas will fill in one tank and it'll trigger the gas station pump to think the car's full.

If you want to have Nissan fix it, tell them to check their TSBs and there should be one on tanks not filling to full. Also, be sure to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The more people who file complaints on manufacturer defects, the more likely it is that Nissan will be forced to do a recall. It only took 30 complaints from Toyota owners to get Toyota to recall 1.5 million cars recently, so it does work.

Pour slowly, do it while it's cool outside, and find a gas station where it's consistently working and you'll be fine. Search the site and you'll see a lot of chatter about this issue.

If I can understand what youre saying, I have the exact same issue.

Ill fill up my car till it clicks once, and when I turn on the car it says im at a little under 3/4ths of a tank. Its completely full, just not registering everything. Its so annoying -____-. I count my mileage since I drive 30 miles to work so this is throwing me off a bit.
