Exclamation Z stalled on the freeway. Advice?

Hi everyone,

I was on the freeway on the way home from work when I experienced some issues. I was going 65mph and the Z (2004 auto 82k) started to jerk. I stepped on the gas pedal more and no response, the Z was losing speed. I pulled over to the shoulder and the car engine shut off. I started the ignition and it started to drive normally and it didn't happen again. The check engine light never came on and the power was still on because the steering wheel did not lock up.

Does anyone know what the cause could be?

The Z has never experienced any issues until today. I was low on gas but I filled up 5 minutes before I started to experience problems. I drove 30 miles after that with no problems.

It sounds as though your Z was” fuel starved.” That could happen with a fuel pump problem or possibly a vapor-lock. I’m guessing but I think it may have been a vapor lock because the problem went away after stopping and restarting the car. Vapor-lock is rare in modern vehicles. --Spike

Thanks for your reply.

My Z just did the same thing earlier. I was just driving on the streets then the tach slowly jerkily dropped in RPMs and the wheel locked up. The Z started right up 10 seconds after. Once again no codes thrown.

Any ideas?

As Spike also said, seems like something in the fuel delivery. I would have your fuel pump checked out first. If that is fine, I would major check injectors and fuel line. It sounds like your car is not getting sufficient amount of fuel and is choking.

Sounds like MAF issues. Try cleaning the sensor.

Wouldn't the car go into limp mode if it was just a dirty sensor? This does not sound like a sensor issue. OP needs to pull out the fuel pump and visually inspect it and then check the rail pressure. it seems unbelievable that there wasn't a CEL thrown after a catastrophic engine failure like that. I wouldn't screw with it. OP, you should get it checked.
