Hey guys, hopefully someone can help me on this issue. I had my 05' 350z in the garage for a month or two. Decided to take it out for a drive the other day but ended it short due to over heating issues. Once I got the car home and cooled,it started up again. Noticed the cooling fans are not spinning, even when hot I could manually spin the pass. Side fan by hand and you can feel it start to grab and turn but spinning weak. The driver side fan nothing. I also figured when it started to overheat, I would try the heater on to see if that would help. No dice, the heater won't even blow heat out. I visually inspected the fuses, they look good, nothing looks like it was shorted. I ran a code scan on it and got engine over temp and a P0300, random misfire.

To me it sounds like the fans are bad, but they spin freely, with no resistance. Also could be a thermostat, but wouldn't the heater work still.

Anyone dealt with this type of problem? I'm trying to avoid a costly trip to the dealer. Wold prefer doing the work myself.

Start vehicle and turn A/C on. If fans don't spin then they are malfunctioning. Common problem. So common that Nissan extended the warranty on cooling fans in Z's

 

Ok, the fans don't spin when the a/c is on. Ok, cool. Now would that cause the heater not to work?

 

I don't think so, the A/C fan should be completely separate from the radiator fans. The A/C is buried under the dash somewhere. I'd have to look at the shop manual to find out for sure since this is a piece of my Z I have never had to bother with (yet).

When you turn up the A/C and fan you still get air correct? Just the temperature isn't adjusting correctly?

There might be confusion, the radiator fans are not spinning when the ac is on. Ac blows cold. My question is now, since the radiator fans are not working, I have tried turning on the heater to try to help the engine cool a little, but no heat comes out of the vents, just ambient air.

I'm not sure if this is part of the Z ECU doing to a fail safe mode or do I have something else happening.

 

Cooling fans are dead. Common problem. You probably have air pockets in cooling system due to coolant boiling over.

 

About $150 for a set of OEM type fans, or a good time to upgrade to something more substantial if that's where you are wanting to go with the car long-term. Sometimes just one fan fails, causing the car to run slightly hot until the second one lets go at an inopportune time. Easy enough to do the job yourself.

 

Would the air pockets in the cooling system cause the heater not to work? I'm looking at the links that were sent to me. The ECM pretty much controls everything, so it doesn't surprise me if that is the case.

Nothing really long term with it, but living in Texas, upgrading the cooling system is always a must. Whether it is performance or not

 

That air pocket issue can cause some headaches.....but I think it's second on your to-do list after the fans. A thorough burping is the last step before buttoning up your cooling system.

 

By non-OEM I'm referring to all-aluminum set-ups some of the guys run.....maybe something that can handle more power if you're planning to squeeze more power out of the motor. I replaced mine with some OEM-types and it's quite adequate and still going strong.

I just want to give you guys an update. With the advise and the links to the factory repair manual. I was able to test the fans and indeed they were dead. I bought a VDO replacement from Oreilly's dropped it in, burped the system and everything seems to run good. Fan comes on with the a/c on and when the a/c is off it cycles like normal again.
