Default soft top wont open

ok guys, so i bought an 06 roadster and its soft top happens to not go down. I turn on the car , opens the top latch, press the break and push the open button , but the only thing that happens is the windows rolling down and thats it. when i press the button multiple times i can hear a clicking noise coming from the door. Any idea what could be causing this issue? thanks!

It could be a sensor gone bad or even a failure of the roof motors themselves. I certainly hope you got a great deal on this ZR, because you're going to need to take this to a factory trained technician to get it properly fixed.

There's really not much a DIYer can do for ZR top operation. You could spend some time looking at the FSM to examine the circuit pathways and mechanical operation, but these are complex problems. You may have one problem, or it could be a combination and a factory tech will need some time to figure it out.

There's no way to accurately estimate how much a repair like that would cost. Dealership service costs vary from different parts of the country, but you can ask shops in your area what their hourly charge will be. In my area, they're over $100/hour and it's not a stretch to say that kind of repair could stretch to several hours (and that doesn't include the cost of any new parts needed).

BTW- before you bought this ZR, how did you determine the condition of the soft top itself before you put down your money?

You could just drive with the top up until you have sufficient funds to pay for the repair. Depending on what is broken, the repair costs could be from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand dollars.

I would force it down and never drive with the top up. Looks hideous with the top up

Appearances aside, how would you keep yourself and the interior dry if you were caught in a sudden rainstorm with the top stuck down? Forcing the ZR power top either up or down is NOT a good idea. The mechanism is delicate enough that any force will likely bend or break expensive parts.

Loopez, because the top opening sequence happens slowly, step by step out in the open before your eyes, DIY repair and service is not as hard as you might think. Windows down is the first step; second step is for the passenger seat-back to tilt slightly forward for the duration of the top operation. This so-called safety feature is meant to warn a dozy passenger about the impending top movement. It’s a stupid feature that even Nissin thinks is unnecessary, because there is a switch on the back of the seat to cancel this useless step. Try switching this off, or if it is already off, turn it back on. This switch has been a little troublesome causing the exact problem you are experiencing as well as interfering with the full tilt forward feature of the seat.

Loopez, most Nissan dealers have techs that can repair your ZR soft top. If the passenger seat switch trick doesn't work, call a Nissan dealer in your area. I have an 08 Roadster as well and haven't had any issues with the top. However, I do have a couple of small tears in the canvas. I may have the top replaced if they get worse.

Keep us updated on your progress.
