Default CD009 Synchros interchangable in 2003 Trans?

Looking to get the trans rebuilt on my 2003 350z, went online and am wondering if I can get the upgraded cd009 synchros in my transmission, the guy on the phone said the 5th and 6th gear syncro is not interchangable and will need a new input shaft (another $300), but are the rest of the sycros the cd009 ones? Does anyone know of a good place to get the sycros cheap? The 1st and 2nd gears are $100 each, the rest are $30. If I do end up getting it rebuilt I want to go ahead and get all the sychros done while its all apart, except the 5th/6th gear (same Sycro) unless I can get ones that are compatable with my input shaft, so I dont have to shell out another $300, so my last question, where can I get the compatable 5th/6th gear syncro?
My other option is to get a used cd009, but for the same price I could have mine completely rebuilt. Any advice is appreciated.

I wouldn't waste my time rebuilding a not so great transmission when you can buy a cd009 for so cheap. You can get used ones for very cheap and even new is $1,600 if I remember correctly.

I agreed. Mine 03 started with 3rd gear syncro going bad and then 5th as well. If I shift really slowly it wouldn't grind. But that was no fun.

Picked up an used G35 CD009 for cheap and works great. Been 5 years now since I replace the transmission. I was even able to sell my old transmission to some drift junkie.

Ok Ill start looking for a used CD009. My third gear sychro chirps a little when shifting fast so it may be the beginning of the end for it, the car has 72k miles and everything else works great, dont really need the new trans/rebuild but I want to be able to take it to the track and not have to worry about it.

I have yet to see a single report of a rebuilt CDxxx transmission for the Z...not saying it hasnt happened or that im the most active member but just never seen it happen.

Likely for the reasons everyone has stated, that once you add in the labor might as well just swap it out with new. I have even seen responses to posts like yours where the estimated total cost of the parts alone for a full rebuild is close to a new trans.

I would love to see someone do it though.

if you don't want to worry about it, why buy used... get a new one with warranty

Ya I would love to be able to get a brand new one, but I am looking for something a little less expensive. I blew all my money on the car in the first place lol.. I found a guy that can do the labor for around $300 if I pull it for him and get all the parts. I figure that the one in it has done 70k miles so a rebuilt one will do the same. All in all it would be about $600 to get it rebuilt which is also around the price of a used cd009. So anyway if I do get it rebuilt I can put up the details of what I used and the result, could be a better option with $1k in savings.

the flaw with your statement is that a 03 transmission with cd009 syncros, is now a cd009 for much cheaper then 1600. the "inferior" part is the syncros. power wise they hold up just fine as demonstrated by people putting 600-1000+ whp through 03 and 04 trannys.

op yes it can be done but it should require drilling holes for the triple cones used in first and second that may be why it is more expensive is they are including drilling the locating holes.

it has been done, even been done so far as to have custom gears built from PAG for third gear that a guy was having issue with. he is also the one who installed cd009 syncros in his either 03 or 04 transmission.

this happened several years ago too, was in the FI section iirc

Do you know the degree of difficulty in dropping the trans? On my old camaro it was pretty easy, Just unbolt driveshaft then the trans mount and the other mounts on the bottom of the trans that hold it to the car, then the trans from the bellhousing, other little stuff like the electric sensor plugs and the clutch slave, Theres nothing really tricky is there?
I hate taking my car anywhere to have work done, the third gear sycro is $30, I called a shop and they said it would be $1500 just to do third gear, so I can see in some cases the cd009 is the same price and the better option, I dont care if I have the old sycros if they last 70k miles.

it is fairly easy, take the slave off and let dangle.... ad then there are like 8 bolts, a couple of them you will have to get from the top side.... laying on the engine works to get em

LOL, the biggest difference between the two is the synchros. Single cone vs triple cone, you do the math.

Ya math is the whole point in this thread, like not spending 2k+ for something can be fixed for 600

Finally got done with my CD009 swap today, and I love it big difference over my old trans, am using the OEM Nissan Fluid. Having done all the work myself and getting the trans used the swap will only cost me around $500 assuming I can get a couple hundred for my old one.

I’m glad to hear your project went well.

I swapped the original transmission in my 2003 for a CD009. As you mention, the CD009 is enormously better providing significant improvements over the stock transmission. Of course the synchromesh-grinding (what initiated the path to the repair) was gone.

And, everything else was better with the new transmission:
  • Shifting was smoother (less “notchy”).
  • Gear engagement was noticeably better (I did not do anything to the clutch).
  • Throws were much better (no “searching” to a gear).

I have about 50k on the new transmission, and never had any problem. It shifts as though installed yesterday.
