Brake Squealing Ahhh!!!
Im having a brake squealing sound, shriek, like someone running their nails through a chalk board, coming from my Z. Ive previously had other brake noise, but its come and gone, this has been a little more persistent. I have 8000 miles on the car, and my commute has a lot of stop and go. Weathers been a little crappy but nothing too bad. Is this just normal wear and tear, or should I look into a new set of pads. The sound is freakin annoying. Any help is appreciated. Oh yeah the sound like in previous posts is from slow speed stops.
i have it to.... somebody suggested going to a deserted/queit area, and brake very hard from 60 mph. almost to a complete stop w/out stopping a few times... supposedly this is gonna create an even amount of wear on the rotors or something (break them in somehow)... i might try this when the weather gets warmer over here...i'm still debating wheather to do it or not since i never heard of anything like this before...
It's called bedding the brakes. You especially have to do it with new pads but if you've never done it, even with old ones, it's a good idea. Basically speed up to 40, then stop hard to 10, do that a few times, then from 60 to 10 4-5 times. By the time I was done, I could barely stop (lucky I didn't warp my rotors really) and have had no problems, even with the Hawk pads which supposedly squeak. Try it and I bet it works.
I'll try it after work. Im really close to a state park beach that is usually empty on the weekdays, especially with all this cold weather. Ill let you know the results. Thanks for the help.
When you do this should the brakes and rotors already be warm i.e. u were driving the car for like 30 mins before or can it be done with them cold like u just started the car and started doing this? thanks. BTW i have hawk HPS pads and they squeak i always thought it was because when i changed them i didnt have time to resurface my rotors so i just sanded them by hand to get most of the old pad stuff off them thanks for you input
Permatex Anti-Squeal Paste
For shimmed brake pads, apply the paste between the pad and the shim. For non-shimmed brake pads, you will need a different type of anti-squeal compound (I forget what it's called though).
If you're tracking your car, then I don't recommend using these products as they may carbonize due to extreme heat.
Michael.
