Default New 02 sensor, still have service engine light

I had a bad o2 sensor (bank 1 sensor 1). I was getting a P0174 code. Went to advanced auto and purchased a BoschPremium Oxygen Sensor with OE SmartLink™. got the old O2 sensor out, and then had to splice the old connector onto the new sensor. I went gray to gray, black to black, and then had 2 white wires, and was told that the white wires are the same and it didnt matter which white wire went to which white wire. So i did that. Got it all together and put it back in. I cleared the code and took it for a drive. After a while the service engine light came back on. Cleared it again and it still came back. I am getting code P0031. Is there anything I may have done wrong? I was think maybe I make the wires too long and the resistance may be too high. How can I test this?

That is an engine lean code not a bad o2 sensor. More than likely you have a vaccum leak.

The "Lean" code could be related to a faulty Oxygen Sensor.

This is true, but 99 percent of the time when O2's state lean or rich they are only doing their function and stating how the engine is performing. Usually when there is a high/low voltage or heater malfunction; then would be more common to o2 fault.
