Default Shifter completely loose...

I took my Z to a car wash and when I got it back the shifter was magically doing 360's and damn near impossible to find any gear. I have a feeling the driver drove through in gear and not neutral. In any case, what most likely was ruined? The linkage?

They tried to blame the clutch but it's new and has good tension.

Is this something that could be fixed with a manual and common tools?

Sounds like they broke something in the shifter assembly, pull the boot up and take a look if you can see anything obvious, if not you may need to get under the car and check it out.

In gear or neutral shouldn't matter. Sounds like a bolt came loose. Pull the boot and the cover plate to see down through the hole and let us know what is moving.

I decided not to tear it apart due to the fact if I did they could argue I broke it. It's being towed to a certified mechanic and I'll mail them the bill.

Hopefully it is something they did and not something that just happened to come apart at the same time you had it washed.

From your description I can't think of anything they could do to cause it.

I handed them the keys to a working car and was given back a broken one, why couldn't I? The car had to be towed off the lot.

Maybe it's all just coincidence. If it is I'll bite the bill but the driver didn't seem to know how to drive a stick. He stalled out twice trying to get it on the belt.

you have no proof, plain and simple. who is to say that it was already crapping out and just happen to go out there?

OP was trying to perfect his Dougan and broke it when he forgot to double clutch.

Then tried to blame it on the car wash.

Update as promised: http://imgur.com/OsWyL6W

Appears to be something that was going to break anyway, just a crazy coincidence when it did.

At least it wasn't really expensive. I didn't think there was anything the car wash could have done to it.
