exhaust sprocket sticking
I just took my 2006 350Z to my mechanic and had him check why my ses light was coming on, he ran the code twice and told me seems like the exhaust sprocket was sticking. I was given an estimate to try and fix it a price tag of 2100.00 + taxes the cost of the sprocket alone he said was 600.00 plus the whole engine would have to be taken apart,I really just need to pass emissions to get my new tags for this month. He's pretty much been a reputable mechanic thus far and always frank with me on the cost of repairs, was wondering should I take it to the dealership and see what diagnostic they come up with would really appreciate some expert opinions Thanks!
At that point just put a different low mileage used engine in it that hasn't been molested by a non-specialist mechanic. That is what I would do to guarantee success in the end and ensure it happens before your emissions due date.
Yeah, great advice - throw a code, replace the motor. Be serious. This could be something as simple as a bad cam position sensor, along with a douchebag mechanic. Post the code here. What the fukk is a sticking exhaust sprocket, anyway?

Conway your correct it's the cam sprocket, checked my receipt didn't show what the code was so maybe mechanic is trying to hold all the cards,I'm in the process of taking it to the Nissan dealer just to see what they say I still feel my mechanic is a reputable mechanic but a second opinion will be a huge relief for a piece of mind.I was also thinking if the sprocket was stuck why would I need a new sprocket?Up till now I feel my mechanic has been real honest with me so will see, just can't see paying 2,100 dollars to pass emissions when the car is basically purring like a kitten but please keep the good advise coming my way I appreciate every bit of it!!
You can also have your codes read for free at many auto parts stores,, or buy a scanner of your own for ~$20. The OBD2 plug is on the lower dash, on the left, near the hood release.
Cam gears for exhaust don't "STICK" .The intake cam is what " moves "( ADVANCE/RETARD ) based on oil pressure, control. The pair of intake gears are driven off the crank. The Exhaust ( gear ) is chain driven from the intake ( gear ) sprocket. NOW there is an oil tensioner for the chain on the exhaust gear..... If the GEAR appears to stick ( and you would have to pull a bunch O stuff apart to see that ) The cam itself is getting stuck/ hung up through bad bearings, bad lifters.. or some such.. YOU need a 2nd opinion and the dealer at least be able to shine more light on the subject. codes are a PLUS HERE
