Default Trunk open question?

I just purchased a 2004 touring convertible. As I am working through learning the nuances of it, I noticed the trunk does not "pop" open. Yes I know how to open it with the key fob or the button above the license plate. I just have to stick my fingers in the crack and lift it. Once open, it stays as long as I am over 50% open. I'm assuming it's the trunk struts and those need to be replaced. Am I on the right track or is this a design issue?

thanks

Worn springs. Could replace or do the nickle trick

OK I see the springs now on the trunk lid by the latch. I took them out and was able to easily squeeze them with my thumb. I would assume since there was little resistance they are worn and need to be replaced.

Thank you kind sirs. Travlee thanks for the link. that seems to be the best price i can find. And it's from an actual dealer. I called my local dealer and he said that's a good price and he could not match it.

+1 on Courtesy. Pretty simple fix.

As mentioned by turboed350z, just add a couple nickles inside the rubber spring casing. It'll shim the springs enough to give them the energy they need to pop the hatch open.

Is this the same concept with non convertible Z just replace the springs? Mine has the same issue unless I press the button by license plate & lift the hatch at the same time it won't open
