Cool Powersteering tight when warm?

Hey guys and gals,

I need some help. My Z has always been tight on steering and I thought it was odd at how tight it was. Recently, since it has been getting cold, the powersteering is very loose and fluid as it should be. However, once the car warms up, the steering returns to being tight again.

I figure it has something to do with the fluid circulation, but I am at a loss as to where I should start looking to figure out what is going on. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Make sure your engine belt(s) is in good shape. It might be slipping. Also, try a PS fluid change.

Advance Auto Parts has both the Mobil and Castrol Dexron VI ATF, which meets Nissan's specs for use in the power steering. With the engine off, pump or suck the reservoir dry, then refill and start the engine. Run it a bit, repeat the drain and refill, etc., until you've gone through the quart of fluid. I just did mine last October, and I try to remember every few years or 10K miles, as it's under $10.

I'm sure a PS system doesn't beat up the fluid like an auto trans does, but it's super-cheap and easy preventive maintenance. I have a little hand-pump I use to drain the reservoir, like this:

Thanks for that. I will definitely try changing the fluid. I haven't checked up on my timing belt but the other belt that drives the PS pump is in good shape.

No timing belt on a Z, but if you have a DE there are two accessory belts on the front of the motor. The belts shouldn't be burned, cracked, or have too much of a glazed look to the friction surface. The HR motor has a single serpentine belt, but otherwise the same idea.

My fault. I meant to say the timing chain. Belts do look good so I will change the fluid and try that. I am assuming the baster method is the best way to change it?

Not sure you can get a turkey baster in the reservoir, but that hand pump I linked makes it super easy and clean. Advance has them, probably less than $10, and it's also great for refilling the trans or rear differential.
