04 Convertible not latching SOLVED
So I was searching for how to fix my convertible's latching problem, and all I can find on these forums was people pointing to the 5th Bow Motor.
I decided to give it a try and took the motor out, gave it a clean even though it was in pretty good condition. Popped that sucker back in and same problem
The top would be 2-3 inches from touching the tonneau cover and not be pulled down to create a seal. Being in Texas I wanted to use to AC and all of it was escaping through the rear so I was really motivated to fix it
I checked the motor located inside the tonneau cover and it looked fine, did the prong trick where you unplug the motor and send a current through the connection to check for movement, worked fine.
Decided to stick my finger in the hole where the top latches into and felt a whole lot of movement but couldn't figure out how to get to that spot
Solution: Cut a hole using an angle grinder or dremel on the other side of the tonneau cover latching motor, opposite of the access pannel. The Problem was the hook that grabs the top to pull down was missing it's spring that kept it open and ready to hook onto the top. I replaced it with a random spring that I used paperclips to hold in place with a couple twists. Make sure the spring you use is one that pulls things together and not one that pushes things apart if that makes any sense. And be sure it isnt too strong of a spring or the top will struggle to get latched.
Heres a visual I made for anyone who needs help:
