Hello Fellow Z Owners!
I bought a 2004 350 back in 2013(car is payed off)with aftermarket catalytic converters that are not California state compliant(they don’t have the right stamp/code)to be able to pass SMOG. My car failed two tests yesterday and now I have to drive back up to Novato CA(where I first bought the car) to get it passed again. Now these past few times I’ve needed smogged; Olaf the car salesman has brought it to a specific shop to get it passed, but I’m living in San Diego now, so it’s a hassle for sure. So long story short, I want him to pay for the repair to be able to pass smog and obviously not have any difficulties selling the car later down the road.
I really don’t think he’s gonna shell out a 1000 to help.
Should I get a lawyer
What would you guys do?
any input would be much appreciated

Since you have had the car as long as you have, highly doubt they will pay anything. Normally after 30 days everything is on you unless you have a current extended warranty. There are plenty of CA compliant cats out there. I would just find what you can afford and install them. Alot less hassle and won't have to worry about it next year. If you hire an attourney you will be paying more
so what you are saying it that..... six years later you are complaining that you didnt do your due diligence and get a pre purchase inspection on the car.
sorry bud, you are shiite out of luck on this one. not to mention, most used cars say as is no warranty
It's worth mentioning that CA didn't always have as strict a rule for cats. I had a high flow aftermarket cat on one of my old trucks with no numbers on it and it passed as recently as 2011 without issue (sold the truck after that). Perhaps when you bought the car it was fine, but now that CA is even more strict with the BS visual inspection it fails. Find a shop with a blind smog tech and call it a day.

Sounds like your states problem.. as they work in 49 other states... I have pity for the poor people forced to tolerates California's idiocy.

Why would you need to drive some where special to have it passed? if parts have failed.. then moving the vehicle wont fix the parts?
that is confusing.. if my car wont start at one shop.. moving it to another shop wont make it start.right?

Sounds fishy... but okay.. its a state inspection and smog.. if your car wont pass it in one spot. i should not pass it at another state inspection facility with out a repair..
unless. they are doing something ILLEGAL.

Why would he pay to repair a car you owned for 6 years? thats idiotic..
" Hello i bought this car from you 6 years ago.. it was 9 years old when i bought it.. and now i want you to replace the alternator because it doesn't work."
that is not the way things work.. you bought it . its yours. you bought it in as-is condition.

Sir .. seriously.. you are complaining about $1,000 repair on a 15 year old car..

Get some off road down pipes. because florida doesn't have emissions.
If i was in California i would save the money. and move out of the state ASAP.. and let it become the glorious socialist crap hole it is destined to become.
after heading to LA and SF really quick to take a crap in the street first. in front of the mayors houses and the city councilmen's houses.

my input is. its a 15 year old car you bought 6 years ago.. they owe you nothing.
go to a local muffler shop and get some cats welded on if you want for much less than $1,000. or find another "good ole boy" shop and have them waiver you through the emissions test for $100 bill under the table like the rest of the poor people in commufornia do.
