Every 3500 Miles, dealer does the work, I provide the oil, no warranty issues, Mobil1 0-40, in 12500 miles dipstick always shows full. When my roadster is on the rack the dealer is great about letting me watch the mechanic & inspecting the under carriage.

1. drive car
2. let sit for atleast 10 minutes
3. take out engine cover
4. remove oil filter, drain it
5. remove oil from oil pain
6. lubricate oil filter, put oil in the filter, put it back on
7. put the oil pan bolt back on.
8. start adding oil through the engine bay.

somebody correct me if i am wrong. are there any tricks, or any washers or gaskets or anything that i have to reuse?
Step 2 would only be advisory due to heat conditions... conceivably, you could change in almost immediately, but the temps after driving may make it pretty arduous... For step 2, go ahead and put "unscrew oil cap and leave ajar (but not necessarily wide open )

Yeah, and what mode said about the washer If this is your first oil change (on THIS car), good luck removing that oil filter

While reading this, I can't help but get angry at nissan... this is not Z related, so please don't shoot me!! but... my 92SE Maxima, VE30DE engine, used a specific different filter than the VG30E engine of the regular maximas of the same time period... the oil filter called out for the VE30DE was only used on that engine, no other engine that nissan ever made... so what does nissan do last year?? stops making that filter and tells everyone with a VE30DE to use the filter meant for the VG30... so here nissan insists to use the specific filter designed for the VE30DE for 12 years, and then all of a sudden says... actually, it's okay, use the regular filter... (the VE30DE was only on the SE maximas from '92-'94, love the engine btw, 190/190, not bad for a sedan in '92, hangs with an integra GSR and a V6 mustang with no problem!) What upsets me is about 6 months after switching to the other filter, I begin to have the infamous VTC "ticking" noise that happens to this engine... kind of an odd coincidence if ya ask me!! (VTC = Variable Timing Control, shifts the timing on the intake cams) The VTC assemblies use oil to work, so I certainly can see how switching to a filter that does not (I don’t think anyhow) have an anti-drain back valve when the original recommended filter for the VE I believe did have the valve… Sorry about the post since it contributes nothing particular to the oil change in the Z, but then again neither does the "oil change steps" I just wanted to give another example of how nissan can act sometimes.... Nissan designed the filter specifically for the VE, they tell you to only use that specific one for 12 years, then suddenly decide it's okay to use the other one?? Hmmmm.....

Any aftermarket options for that filter? Even if it has to be Fram?

in the "books" at the auto stores, if you look at the filter for the VE engine, it is the same filter that they say to use on the VG... so who knows.... since the VE30DE was only on the 92-94 Maxima SEs, it is very hard to find engine specific parts anywhere other than the dealer... when autozone put in a 92 SE, it came up saying it was a VG engine... Another time, I ordered a valve cover gasket for it from oreiley's... it gets here, I open it at the store and instantly see it is for a SOHC. It was not a large rectangle like is characteristic of a DOHC. The guy looks it up.... oh, I see what I did... okay, the right one will be here in a few days... I go back up there, still the wrong part... finaly, I just went to the dealer, it was only something like $30 anyhow...

On the maxima.org board, people evidently have found an OEM Toyota filter that works well... Though I have not looked into that option yet.
