Default Driving me crazy... help needed!

I have a 03 touring with about 7800 miles on it. For the past month it is emitting an unusal rattle from the dash area. It only happens between 4K & 5k RPM and is most pronounced in third gear. This leads me to belive that it is an engine speed cause not vehicle speed. The noise is hard for me to duplicate but does increase and decrease with engine speed. It is really starting to **** me off and I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar noise/rattle.

I'm mad too. It's not so much the dash in the beginning, but it seems like it's coming from the front wheels. It sounds almost like....hard to duplicate, like you said. Kind of like maybe the wheel is warped, so the faster it goes around, the more vibrating. But they are not warped. I've had my rotors checked out, but they were fine. No one else seems to hear/feel the noise except my boyfriend, who also drives it regularly. The problem didn't start until about 8K miles. Once when I had it checked out, they said that the bolt was loose and they tightened it, but it didn't really help. Then my dad looked at it and noticed that all the tires had different pressures. Making them equal helped get rid of some of the rattle, but not completely.

You are the proud owner of feathered tires. Read all the info on here about tire feathering. They are probably playing stupid b/c they don't want to fix it. IT is a big mess! Where are you taking yoru Z for service?

doc3763, Thanks for the reply, but I have had the tires taken care of by the dealer..... brand new as of 1000 miles ago. The sound it more of a rattle and it only occurs at a cetian part in the rev range. It is quite annoying and I am hoping that the dealer will be able to find it when I bring the car in next week. I was just trying to get some preliminary info to help my case.

My 3 pod gauge area has started to rattle lately. I'm trying to decide if it is worth a trip to the dealer, or if I should just pull it apart myself and see what is up. I'm leaning toward the later.

It is funny you say that because it sounds like the sound it coming from that area, but when I press on it the noise does not subside. Does it happen at higher RPMs or all the time?

I had a rattle between the windshield and top of the dash. I fixed it by stuffing some black felt down there. It hasn't come back in a year, knock on wood.

Just to give you a laugh, the dealer told me this was a sports car with hard suspension and rattles were normal :-(

-check the tape deck( i know who uses the tape deck nowadays...someone else put a tape in the deck!)-solved one problem.

-check the sunglass holder...yesterday something started rattling...and it was the sunglasses inside the holder(on top)

-then any kind of change...fallen through your pockets inbetween the chairs...etc.

basically...eliminate everything you could think of because the suspension is "bouncy" anything is bound to rattle from whatever we put in the car.

look at my siG...no rattles!~ and i'm in the chicago area where the roads SUCK!

I have so many rattles that it's not even worth trying to figure out where they come from.

I bought a new car to get rid of the damn rattles in my maxima. This car rattles JUST AS MUCH.. and I had a 2" drop w/ kyb AGX's.. Nissan cannot get their cars right.

My security light rattles, there is a creak coming from the rear on slow sharp turns, my seat creaks when you put pressure on the front right of it, and most annoying, their seam to be a rattle behind the navigation unit.

This sucks... I am embarressed to drive people around in my "new car"

It is worth reading all the info on here about tire feathering and seeing if this goes along with what you might be hearing. I take mine to Bankston Lewisville. I knew my tires were feathered when I took it in. When I told them about the awful sound coming from the front tires they quickly said, "your tires are feathered." lol. Now getting the problem fixed......good luck. Nissan is treating it like cancer, there is no cure. They just do things to increase the short life of the tires. They have released TSB's for '03 model cars on this issue, but not '04's. I am taking my Z back on Tuesday to get this all worked out again. lol.

If you ever take your car to get serviced at Bankston Lewisville ask for Joe Lott.

Alot of plastic parts under the car will vibrate under speed. I had a rattle noise in the cabin at higher speeds coming from under seat area. It was a loose plastic piece under the car that rattled when air flowed around it. Check under car where seats are mounted for plastic that may hit other metal.

Try checking your steering column lever? Make sure it is up and tight. Sometimes if it is not all the way up there is a rattle sound by the gauges. My guages rattle sometimes, but not all the time.

Thanks for all of your replys. I had the car in the dealer yesterday and they adjusted the some pieces on the A pillar. This seemed to work but the dreaded noise it returned this morning. It seems to be more sensitive to temperature. When it is warm outside the rattle is not as pronounced. It seems to be coming from the center of the dash by the windshield, but when I press on certian areas there is no reprieve. I am going to look at it more closely this weekend.
