Problems with gas guage / filling tank completely.
Have y'all just given up? This is still a problem for me. Please post if you've figured out what's up.
And BTW, the rotate 180 degree thing is not an appropriate workaround, even if you can get another gallon in. The looks you get at the pump while doing this just adds to the overall disappointment of owning a Z.

I have the same gauge problems with my 03 Touring. Last time I got gas, I let the gauge get to E with the light on and 37MTE. Filled up and I could only get 13.335 gallons in the tank. Asked the dealer if this was normal and they said your car just has a 6.5 gallon reserve. I've had several vehicles, and this seems like a BS answer to me! Anyway, does anyone's Bose 6-disc skip in the mornings? [/QUOT
The second time I went to fill up it happend to me...I could only get a half tank and It keep shutting off and I knew that was wrong...keep pulling the nossel out and turning it, I finaly got 3/4 of a tank and gave up.I think your dealer gave you a bunch of BS.
Just read Joebva reply - That sounds like that may be the whole

I have only had my 2004 Touring Roadster for a month. I had some problems filing the tank the first time. It was if there was a back pressure valve that would not release and allow the gas to flow in. After about two minutes of ultra slow filling and auto shut off, it began to take fuel. This happened the next time as well. When I went in last week to fill up, it never would accept any fuel. I took it in to the dealer and they said they were going to have to replace the tank. They said they tested the pressure valve with nitrogen.
I'm not real thrilled with the idea of a two day fuel tank replacement... any thoughts?

I don't know if a new tank will fix the problem. I actually got a new tank in my 04 I've had for 10 months. I had a crappy custom audio install job, and the installer drilled a hole in my gas tank mounting a sub in the stock sub compartment (the gas tank is right there, and is made of plastic!)
It's more than a two day job, and it costs a ton. I had to pay a grip - even with the discount the manager hooked me up with.
.....and now for the first time, I'm having this gas-tank-won't-fill-up-all-the-way problem a few months after I got my new gas tank.
Has anyone found a solution to the problem??

Thanks for the info DZTZ33. I gave it one more try because it was a beautiful day and I wanted to take it on a road trip to OKC. It took 5 minutes to slowly put about 3 gallons in then it began to take gas at a reasonable rate. Same deal when I got back but it seemed to take a little less time/volume before the tank began to take fuel. Does anyone have a schematic of the tank or a link to an online manual so I can see what I'm dealing with?
I have a 2004 with 3200 miles on it. Have NEVER been able to put more than 15-16 gal in...and I run it to ---------.
Never had a prob with gas gauge in car though.
What I have found is that these cars are very fickle. I have never had issues with trans, tires or radio...

i have a 03 touring model, and i have the same problem with the fuel pump prematurely shutting off. I often find myself trickling gas into the tank, only to have the pump click off after a half a gallon has pumped. It had been mildly annoying, however, lately it has gotten to be an absolute pain in the ***. I find myself sitting at E, again, putting fuel in as if i'm using an eye dropper........anything more will cause the pump to click off. I'll just go ahead and add this to the list of crap nissan refuses to fix properly.....................ya know, i think the Z just has a negative stigma to it. If this happened to be a maxima, nissan would not only fix it, but they'd perform free sexual favors for you while you waited. Later, they'd put you up in the Ritz and apologize to you over a nice BJ.
Note to self, buy a maxima........hrm........

I have noted that not letting the tank go to empty seems to have a positive effect on the amount of time it takes for the back pressure valve to release. The last time I filled up it only took 1.2 gallons before it started taking gas normally. It seems to be getting better.
I'm not sure if my problem has gotten better, but it hasn't gotten any worse. I stopped monitoring the gauge after a few weeks. So as for a solution, I have just lived with the fact that I have to fill up about 50 miles sooner then what I think I should.
It appears there is not a solution i have 21k on my 03 and have the same problem i personally can never get more than 13.5 gallons in my tank before I am done. Has anyone tried to go beyond that to see if the gas will start to shoot out the tank? Just curious.

This has only happened to me twice in 2 years. Once in the fall of 03 and once last week. Last week I got tired of the pump clicking off every tenth of a gallon and left. Later on I went back to another station and filled it up completely.
There seems to be 2 problems:
1-the inability to fill the tank without having the pump clicking off all the time - my problem
2-and the gage not reading full when the tank is full - unless the problem is related to # 1 because the tank is really not full...

Dammit...this happend to me for the first time tonight. The gas guage was just a tick above "E", and I could only get 8 gallons in. Frustrating as hell!!
About 1/2 hour later (and about 20 miles of driving), I pulled into another gas station to see if I could top it off. Luckily, it let me put another 9 gallons in without a problem.
Maybe it's a certain kind of gas pump that does this to the Z?

There seems to be both a design and a construction problem. The tank has 2 humps in it that may pose an equalization problem and thus not allowing a full fillup. So people have noted that rotating the pump handle 180 degrees seemed to help. I would think that it actually was giving the the tank a chance to equalize that made the difference.
As to the slow fill problem, I have been fighting this since day one. Last night was my fastest fill with only about .5 gallon needed to release the back pressure valve. I noted that the fuel guage was only 2/3rds down. This implies to me that as the tank empties, the vapor pressure of the gas remaining increases holding the back pressure valve shut. This might also explain the relationship to temperature that some people have experienced.
I hope I get this figured out before it gets real cold here. I hate standing at the pump for 15 mins.

To aid in solving this issue i have driven until --------And will drive until my car dies at which point I have a gallon in a container in my trunk and driving down a road that gas stations are plentiful and will fill up to make sure I can get the entire tank full if not able to will take into Nissan, and let them half *** fix the problem. My dealerships out here are eager to make everything the drivers fault as Nissan can do no wrong. Shame Shame

I had mine for over a year, usually on an empty tank I could add about 16-18 gallons. Then one day it started showing up empty, yet I could only add 12-14 gallons. I noticed this for a couple of weeks, so I took it to Nissan. The genius mechanic said that sometimes the light comes on early, to give you a warning. So I explained to him not only does the light come on, but the analog arrow is at the "E" line and the DTE is showing about 18 miles remaining. I had them order me a new sensor for the fuel tank, I think it was 2 sensors actually. Ever since they changed the sensors, I can now once again put 16-18 gallons in my car when it gets to "E".
I have never had a problem getting the car to accept gas at the pump.
