Default Re: Re: Fuel Tank gauge doesn't fill

I did some research and found the following:

http://puckparches.proboards4.com/in...num=1079789588

The user Infinitiexpert found that on G35s, the fuel tank has "two fuel sender units, some times is necessary to ohm test the units to find the bad one" Another user had a problem with his 2004 350z only filling to 3/4 of a tank

---

Even more interesting was a TSB that I found on the 2003 Infiniti GX series:
http://www.infinitihelp.com/Ownershi.../ITB03-073.htm

Basically it says that there are two sending units that need to be reinstalled

--

And if those two weren't interesting enough, I called 1800NISSAN1 and spoke to a representative. He said that he has not heard of this fuel tank problem in the 350zs, but if I were to take my car into a Nissan service center, they would fix the "fuel sensor" in the gas tank. They will fix the problem for free if the car is less than 3 yrs/36000mi.

--

Jeff, those were the good old days, where I would visit this website twice a day, hoping to find out the horsepower, torque and 0-60 on my preordered Z.

As for fuel issue, it sounds like we share same issue. No pop-charger here either (or any perfomance mods for that matter). I also don't think flipping the nossle over will do anything but make me create a mess. I really think the tank is full, and it is just the gauges not reflecting it.

I haven't taken it into (or spoken with) Nissan yet, but plan on doing so very soon. I'm tempted to go ahead and drive like 100 miles past E, just to prove that there is more fuel in the tank...but, seems like a trip to the dealer is more appropriate.

Anybody else try the Redline SI-1? I want to see if it is an isolated case (me). I filled up again recently ... 12.4 gallons and the guage went beyond the Full mark again.

You can get it at Pepboys for 5.99 a bottle.

Has anyone taken in their car to have the fuel gauge fixed yet? Huntington Beach Nissan said they'ld fix my gauge if I make it over there during business hours with a nearly empty tank.

How will you determine nearly empty?

I might take mine there too, since I work in Westminster.

This morning, for the 5th time, my Z shuts off the fuel pump after only putting in ~5 gallons. I took it into the dealer a month ago and of course they could not reproduce the cutoff. They ordered one of the sensors that goes in the tank. I am taking it back in next week.

After reading another post I tried turning the pump handle upside down after the pump shuts off...and it works. Once I get a couple of more gallons in the tank I can then flip the handle back to the normal position and continue filling.

If you look at the fuel tank in the service manual it has a hump, which creates 2 areas for fuel. One side is much smaller than the other. This may be the "reserve" that someone mentioned in an earlier post and this may cause the car not to fill up.

I would try flipping the pump handle 180 degrees and see if another few gallons go in.

I reset my trip odometer after every fill up... I average around 20mpg. So if I'm averaging crappy gas mileage (19mpg) x 18 gallons used = 342 miles. So I should be safe at 300miles.

If you take your car to HB nissan, ask for Jeff. He knows about the fuel gauge problem

Same problem here.

Seem like the gas tank gauge float/sensor is the problem. Could affect how the miles per gal is calculated?

I just put in a bottle of Redline SI-1.. it's only 6 bucks, and it can't hurt. I'll run through this tank and keep you posted.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I read in the Owner's Manual that the Z's fuel tank has a small reserve. This might be causing all of the fill-up problems. I'll double check.

Actually you are right about this. The DTE and gas guage generally like to read empty when 16 gallons of fuel have been used. There is a four gallon reserve. I mentioned the Redline stuff for the gas guage problem. Orignally, when I would fill the tank up till vapor cut off (and then some) the gas guage upon starting the car would read about an 1/8 of a tank below Full. When I first drove the car, the guage would read well about the full mark. After a tank of Redline, the guage starting acting normal again; when I filled the tank up, it would go above the full mark. Since doing this (whenever I posted in this thread that I would), I have not had a problem since.

Default Redline S-1

If you read my posts over the last month or two, my 2003 Z has also had the problem where my fuel gauge would report an empty tank after driving 200 miles. Even after fill up, it would only fill to 3/4 of a tank per the gauge reading.

Although my dealer was willing to replace one of the fuel tank sensors, I decided to take MonkeyBoy's advice and tried Redline S-1 after a fill up....

As silly as this may sound, I was able drive my car 350 miles before the empty light came on, and after I filled up my empty tank, my gauge went back up to Full.

Amazingly it worked. I was quite amazed that only after 20k miles that my gas tank would be dirty, especially since I only use Chevron premium (with techron).

I'm sold. I'm planning to use Redline S-1 every 5-10k miles just to keep my fuel system clean.

thanks monkeyboy!

Hopefully this will make it a trifecta ... then we can petition the mods to make this a sticky or something.

My dealer (Boardwalk Nissan in Redwood City, CA) replaced my gauge set/cluster as a means of fixing this problem last week. I fueled up last night. 16.3 gallons and the needle was just below the full hashmark. What a surprise, my dealer left something unfixed again!

Anyway, if your dealer recommends fixing the problem by replacing the gauges, tell them it probably won't work (but probably will create new rattles).

I will go buy some Redline S-1 later and post my results.

I can't wait to switch jobs so I can sell my car.

Odd, my dealer replaced the fuel level sensor which didnt work, then they replaced the cluster and now the fuel gauge works again.

Redline SI-1 did not seem to work for me, at least after (1) tank of gas. I filled up this morning. Gauge was close to if not sitting on "E", DTE display indicated 60 miles to empty. I figured I should be able to get 15 gallons in.

Was only able to pump in 13.5, and gas gauge needle stayed short of "F".

I just reviewed my initial post in this thread, and at that time I was only able to get 11.5 gallons in when my DTE say 51, so, maybe things did improve some.

Hmmm....well, I don't think it is worth having a dealer replace my gauge cluster. I'll post an update in about a week after my second fill-up.

Ditto the last post. The Redline fuel system cleaner did not work for me either. Filled up today and the needle was just shy of the F hashmark (again). The car drives better though...

Anyway, sh*tcan the Redline and make yet another appointment to see those friendly, lovely folks at your Nissan dealer. (can you smell the sarcasm?).
