It's rattling quite a bit, but I'm not worried.

Shifter Rattle - YOU rate it.
MY car is tripping me out....drive by wire defect, grindy gears, squeaky brakes.....Weird thing is....been driving since I picked up from the dealer friday...second gear no longer grinds..but now 3rd does...very weird. Brakes stoped squeaking too.
I think my car has gremlins in it. LOL ...geez.

See it and hear it. My wife said, "Oh My!"
Jason what the hell is going on with your Z man? Has anyone else had the same problems? Droidekaus, I've got 2300 miles and no shifter rattle either. I do have a small vibration in like 3rd gear sometimes, but nothing severe. I'd get that checked out.
From SportZ, Fall 2002
"The engine is mated to a close ration 6-speed gearbox or a 5-speed automatic. While the shift **** on the former is very nicely done - leather wrapped, delivering quick and downright fun shifts with a throw of force similar to the Z32 - it's somewhat wobbly side to side when in gear and transmits a good deal of vibration from the drive train when the RPMs are pushed into the upper range. This vibration was enough to even get the shifter **** rattling around at the torque peak at 4800 rpm. When quizzed about the vibration, Nissan said that they looked at fixing it, but adding rubber isolators to clean up the vibration would have killed the precise gates and shift feel, so they consciously decided to leave it the way it is."
Performance over smoothness. I'll take that any day!

Case closed. If it breaks, I've always got my warranty.
Thanks,

Hmm, my shifter has a lot of vibration, but no actual audible rattle. At low speeds, the vibration isn't that bad, but when I wind it up, it really shakes a lot. Way more than my Accord, which doesn't shake at all. Not that that's any better...
Makes it hard to drive with your hand on the stick. I know you're not supposed to, but I'm kind of used to doing it. The vibration makes my hand go numb and then it's hard to do my job.

haha, mine doesnt rattle, but if I have my hand on the shifter, I can feel it vibrating, and the watch on my wrist will hang down and rattle against the console. my parents were wondering what the noise was.
should I look into this as a warrentied defect?
oh and whats up with people calling posts "attempts for points" if no ones caught on yet, the points are reletivily useless. about the biggest thing you can do is have your name highlighted in a color, or get rid of a warning.

My shifter vibrates less than I thought it would based on comments I've read on this board and the magazines. There's a "normal" amount of vibration to me across the rev band.
I haven't heard any rattle at all from my shifter at 1400 miles. I think I have detected a pattern in the posts here, though. Those that are driving the Z the way it's SUPPOSED to be driven (F*ck the bogus breakin recommendation in the owner's manual
) aren't getting any rattle. Those that are keeping it below 4000 RPM are getting rattle. Maybe the rattle is only evident at a certain RPM and we are passing through that RPM so fast it never gets a chance to rattle!
