Angry Rattling Transmission

Just bought a 2004 350z Performance model a few days ago. The car had about 440 miles on it when I purchased it and I have since put on about 200 miles. I have noticed a rather irritating noise that comes from somewhere under the car (while in 1st to 3rd gear) and while the car is idling. The noise sounds like a metallic rattling sound that goes away when the clutched is throw in.

I brought the car into the dealership today and they indicated that they would have to order me a new tranny. Additionally, they thought the problem was resolved with the 2003 models and didn't understand why the problem was still occuring in a 2004.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Additionally, has anyone gotten a new tranny and if so, has it proven successful - no rattling, etc.? I'm particularly curious about hearing back from people with a 2004 model.

You think that noise is annoying .. Just wait until your tires start to feather, then the roaring will make you forget all about the throwout bearing noise.

How long does it take to feather and I heard a rumour that the tires are to be replaced every 20k miles or so. Is this true? Do you have a 2004? Did you get a new tranny?

It started getting loud around 6-7k miles and just got worse from there. I took it in at 10k and got new tires.

For this kind of tire, I think they do wear out naturally around 20-30k miles depending on driving habbits.

I have a 2004, and I have the same transmission rattling you do (as most Zs do). I recently took the car in for some warranty work, and they told me that the noise is normal for the Z ..... gotta love that.

BS.. thats not normal. It sucks when I'm at a traffic light and people are admiring my car only to have them hear it sound like a piece of junk when I accelerate. This is not normal. My dealer told me they were gonna replace the tranny. Hopefully that will work. Any idea if I could just return the car w/in a certain amount of time? It'll be day 4 tommorow, I wonder if they'll give me a NEW car.

Hey Newbie, thanks for the reply. Question for you, do you know which version of the tranny you had replaced? Apparently they are on a version 8.

You should take your car into the dealership and have them replace your tranny with the newest version out there. I think its 008 or something like that.

Let me know if they replace your tranny for this noise. And, more importantly, if it fixes the problem.

How can you look up the version of the tranny? is it imprinted somewhere on the body?
