Default Gas Light on @ Half tank

Turned the car on and DTE indicator is flashing @ 100 mile to empty and tank gauge shows empty with the light on. Turned it off and moved key back to on position and it was normal @ half tank. Started car and it went back to empty with DTE flashing.

Anyone know what this is?

Mine has been doing that for years. It gets worse when it is really hot out. I've gotten the low fuel light with almost 200 miles DTE. I think that it may be common, but I am lazy and just learned to live with it.

Me too...just learned to live with it. Usually I turn off the car and turn it back on and it just works itself out.

Fuel pump perhaps. The DTE display and actual gauge went absolutely mental before my Z had it's fuel pump replaced. Showing empty, when you'd not long filled, flipping/changing up and down on how much til empty in a matter of 2 minutes.

Is the fuel pump a bit on the noisy side at the moment??

I haven't noticed it at all.. I'll have a listen when I go out for break. Everyone that is saying it's nothing- Major electrical problems often manifest themselves in the form of seemingly harmless symptoms.

My car does this to. I have a 06 enthusiast. I took it to my local Nissan dealership. They kept it for 3 weeks. They replaced the fuel pumps, fuel sensor, guage cluster, and even took panels off the car to see the wiring. Guess what they found? Nothing. They spent hours on the phone with corporate Nissan and couldn't come up with why my car does this. Nissan finally says that its a common problem and that all Z's do this. I have a hard time with this answer but thats what they told me.

If it is the fuel pump, it will start getting quite noisy, really shrill, and it will be uncomfortable to be in the car, sore ears + the giving all sorts of crazy false readings on the displays. When went through this with my Z, it was probably 3 times as noisy as what is considered to be normal. Very audible even with the radio on.

Fuel pump was replaced, the problem went completely, and the replaced pump makes almost no noise, even without the radio on, that's how quiet it is now.

Perhaps do what I did, get quite a few Z's together, and listen and see what is normal, you'll soon pick it, if your Z is way louder. If yours is still under warranty take it to dealer and do the same, this is what I did to prove the point. They do have readers, but proving what isn't normal makes it harder for dealer to argue the point.

It was harmonic vibrations in my Z that took the fuel pump out, all ok in that aspect with your Z Phreaktor?

This happens all the time to me, I just put gas in around 275miles just to be safe. My fuel pump isn't making any noises, but I thought it was the fuel sensors and the dealership wanted to tear up the trunk to get to the tank and since I have a custom system in it, I was in no hurry to let them do it; so I said screw it.

Yeah...My gas gauge has a mind of it's own. I just ran out of gas tonight. I put $40 in before and the damn thing just went to 1/4 of a tank. Out of warranty, so I will just have to live with it and keep gas in it on the regular.

Zracin, my Z's was done a couple or so years ago, under warranty, Kiwi's dollars, so price of parts is a bit different in US.

This started to my Z (101,000 miles) just a few days ago! It's obviously not heat-related as this is winter time in Nor Cal. It's very disconcerting because even though I'm sure I have 1/2 a tank left, I don't want to "chance it" so I stop to fill it up anyway (usually 7-8 gallons). I'm afraid if I get into the habit of disregarding the fuel guage I might lose track of what I really have and then run out of gas one day.

I don't want to take it into the dealership and spend hundreds of $$$ only to have them find nothing wrong!

I'm curious what your mileage is....

Is your fuel pump excessively noisy? When my fuel pump started to give out, it started getting very noisy, ie, extremely shrill and it would hurt my ears to be in the car. The noise will give you some indication as to the state of the pump. Any dealer should be able to hear that, do a comparison to a few others if you're not sure.
