Default Experiment Gone Right?

Good Idea? Bad Idea? You tell me...

I needed some track wheels, so I painted the stocker 17" in gunmetal. They are matte finish. I will take a picture in bright light so you can see the difference, but they look pretty awesome when it's not cloudy like in the photo. The tires are slicks and slightly undersized for a gear ratio advantage on the track, so they probably look a little funny. Anyhow...they look pretty crazy in really bright light (good metallic sheen) or in the dark since they don't reflect anything at night...they have that "race satin" finish.

my only concern is that the rear wheels looks slightly anemic in the wheel well.

If these wheels are to race on, I don't think it matters how they look. I say they are perfect "lookin" but are they functional? You may have more issues rubbing your body kit hittin bumps @ high speeds.

Nice, very nice. I like to see unique customizations like this. I'll bet very few people have painted their stock wheels.

That's all they are on for. There are no clearance issues, and they are only used for track events or the drive to/from. I took the car for a little shakedown run last night with these tires on just ot make sure, and I don't have any clearance issues.

Duplicolor wheel paint. I spent a decent amount of time prepping them though, not just spray-and-dry.

Thinking I might do this myself now.

I was trying to find these for you last night but couldn't...there are pictures from when I actually painted them a few weeks ago:

The first one is (somewhat obviously) a comparison to the stock color.

Hope that helps

i'm actually considering doing the same thing with my stock wheels and putting slicks on them and using htem on a roadcourse.

What size slicks are you running on them?

Matt

255x40 the whole way around much more rigid even than with my 19" street wheels, much better turn in, and slightly better gear ratios. Speedometer suffers though...

Some pictures from the track,

Wowwwwwowowowowww was it hot!!!! Check out the heat radiating off of everything in the one picture...it looks like image resizing distortion!!! I was sweating buckets all afternoon. I scrubbed a set of slicks down to almost nothing in less than two hours, and at several points my brakes were smoking....gonna have to do a good check tomorrow to make sure everything is still firmyl in one piece.

Man, those are the best looking 17" wheels I've seen. Great job on the paint. Btw, what year Porsche is in your garage?

To prep them I washed each wheel thoroughly (soaked in degreaser overnight, then scrubbed with hard plastic brush to loosen brake dust chunks and used cloth to remove everything else. Dried the wheels, then sanded them and removed all of the clearcoat from the factory paint job (most tedious part). Afterwards I washed them all again to remove the dust, then wiped them with alcohol wipes before painting to make sure there wasn't anything on there at all.
