Default question for those in VA with radar detectors

Hey, I was just wondering where you put your radara detectors. I have been thinking about doing the stealth look towards the rear hatch. I have seen people with V1's doing it, but haven't seen any 8500's like that.

Thanks.

Mike do you use your detector in VA (even though they are illegal ) and have you ever been caught using it?? Ive always wanted to get one but havent b/c I was worried I would get 'detected' and fined/ticketed for having one....but if there are guys out there with them...ill take my chances...

I use it mostly at night. I have actually been pulled over once in FFX for it... I left it mounted to the windshield one morning on the way to work.. but I had removed the power cord and put it in my trunk. The cop said "you know these are illegal?" I said "yea .. they are illegal to operate.. but not to posess." I then told him that the power source was locked away in my glove box, and not accessable to me. I grunted on his way back to his car. With a stern verbal warning that I better not operate it.

Its good to know the law

I thought they could detect it when its operational? I've also heard that some radar detectors block the radar detector detectors used by cops.

Radar dector detecors have something called VG2 I believe which turns the detector off for 30 seconds and scans to see if there are any more cops in the area every 30 seconds following that.

As far as cops being able to tell if you have a radar detector, I believe they do, but it is not very accurate and if you are traveling in a pack of cars it would be hard for the cop to tell who had the radar detector.

I have x50, and have it operating 24/7, and I mount it very high on passenger side, like right next to the mirror, and I haven't hardwire it, so the cord is very noticeable, but I drive by cops alot and they never pull me over. I do take it off sometime when I know am not going to speed.

I keep mine mounted on the rear hatch and have the small accessory mount under my steering wheel opposite side the gas button so I can see it only. I have been pulled over and cops cant see it worth ****. They also searched the focking car and couldnt see it. PIGS!

dtlbullet- do you have it sitting on the strut bar, or is it attached to the headliner? Do you have any pics of yours installed?

Thanks

just last week i installed my 8500 x50 with a zr3 shifter. the install only took about 4 hours and it's pretty darn clean. i couldn't take pics as i went along bc i let my roommate borrow my camera for a triathlon out of town. the 8500 is hardwired and mounted as far up as possible and to the right of the rear view mirror.

i also put in a toggle switch next to the tcs on/off button that controls the power to the zr3 and 8500 x50. that way, in case a cop does pull me over, i dont have to reach up and over to turn off the 8500 and then elsewhere to turn off the zr3.

if anyone wants i can try and take some pics when i get my camera back.
